Firstly the hotel was quite easy to find, and was not as disappointing as many of the reviews suggest. You do see a large red bricked building which does make up most of the hotel, but the part in the pictures does look lovely. Even though we stayed in October everyday there was a wedding taking place at the hotel (doesn't really affect guests, as in separate room for food) but there was a tourist trip, which caused a 15minute queue for breakfast as you cannot book, but I would recommend booking a time for evening meal evening meal. The room was old fashioned, but the bed very comfortable and clean. We stayed in a family room one double and two singles, all of normal size not small as some reviews might suggest (I'm not the smallest person in the world and a single was fine for me!) Some wallpaper coming of the walls, and the bathroom was very old fashioned in a lovely brown colour (Sarcastic) The T.V was an old non-LCD T.V approx. a 19inch not bad but no free-view. The weekend of our stay was during a heat wave and the window would barely open, and no fan or air-con so we boiled, and were glad to get out during the day. There was no fridge in the room, or safe, but I believe a safe was offered at reception. All staff were very friendly and helpful (even the ones that didn't know too much about the area, and printed out a map for us.) Breakfast was a full cooked English with cereals, juices, toast and fruit. All food of an average quality (cheapy cereals, and a weird after taste from the apple juice, but I didn't mind it.) Evening meal was three courses, soup of the day, and another, we had melon and a salmon platter, as the two other choices. The soup was tasty with a fresh roll. Main course was a choice of three, cooked meat carvery with vegetables, and two others. We were offered, sweet and sour chicken (Very nice) with rice, or beef stew. Day 2: Shepherd’s pie, turkey dinner, or chicken in white wine sauce. The desserts were not as nice, a choice of 2 gateaux and 2 cheesecakes, Went for ice cream the first night which was a bit tasteless and mandarin cheesecake the next which was OK. Overall a good stay defiantly as it was paid for in Tesco vouchers. We found it good value for the evening meals, and if the weather had been cooler then the room would have been fine. We were worried reading the bad reviews, but we found it to be a lovely weekend, even though the hotel was busy. Oh if you are a light sleeper take ear plugs as the doors are very noisy when they close. When this hotel is given a revamp and maybe upgraded food, then it would be an excellent hotel, but I would certainly go there again (maybe with my own fan!)
I heard people say that in the newer part of the hotel the rooms were better.
