“Fantastic ambience. Pity about the food and service.”
First visit to this restaurant. Very impressed with the decor, ambience and setting, probably one of the nicest for any restaurant, overlooking the Birmingham central canal. Unfortunately that' s where it ended. Firstly the food took nearly 40 minutes to arrive, with no starters and even though the restaurant was not busy when we ordered. We ordered three basic dishes, a chicken madras, a chicken do piaza and a lamb karahi. All three tasted exactly the same, of sweet tomato soup! Maybe the madras was slightly different but only because we had asked it to made extra spicy and hot. I had heard from an Indian chef many years ago that some chefs use tomato soup as a base for their curries for ease and money saving, but never believed it, until today. Even then, it must have been a very cheap tomato soup. If you like tomato sauce straight from the bottle, you would not have been disappointed! It did not stop there, however. When the bill arrived, there was an overcharge for an extra bottle of wine and two glasses of beer!
Normally I would have sent this quality of food back to the chef, which I have done before, but because my colleagues and I were so hungry and did not want to wait another hour or so we grudgingingly ate up and left.
I am sorry to say this was my first visit to Bar a jee, and definitely the last.
