“Travelzoo Spa Day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

A very pleasant spa day at Hotel du Vin, booked for £45.00 pp. Included 2 treatments - we had a shoulder and back massage and an Indian head massage, a glass of prosecco and choc dipped strawberries. What initially surprised us is that there is no pool at this hotel - totally assumed there was! Despite that, treatments very pleasant (thanks to Kelsie) and relaxation room offered pleasant surroundings with comp tea, coffee and fruit.
Ratings based on spa day.
What wasn't so great was when we arrived at 10am and wanted to get a coffee and pastry. Clearly the hotel wasn't ready for that request whilst serving breakfast in the bistro. The head waiter sent us off to the courtyard once he knew we didn't want breakfast, but the courtyard didn't seem very inviting so we went back to reception and asked if we could have the coffees in the spa. Unfortunately not, so thankfully a very nice chap at reception offered to open the bar for us. Very kind of him and a far more inviting area to have a coffee and Danish in.
Spa day great - initial greeting not great so clearly an issue for the hotel to look at in order to improve customer service.

Dear Tracy

Thank you for your excellent review.

I am so pleased to hear that you had such an enjoyable Spa day experience. We are very lucky to have such quality therapists in Kelsie and the rest of the team, I am very proud to have them all here.

I have noted your comments on wanting somewhere to go for a coffee and danish at that time of the morning other than the Courtyard or the Bistro. The bar is open at this time during the week but we will ensure that guests at the weekend can take a coffee down into the relaxation room in future.

I hope you will come back and join us again for another relaxing Spa day soon.

Best regards and thanks again, Tony

This is a lovely hotel and we'll worth a visit. The room was lovely and quite quirky being on three different levels! The bathroom was the best thing with a lovely roll top bath and the best shower I have ever experienced. Facilities in the room were great with a top of the range smart tv, plenty of wardrobe space and a large comfortable bed.

The bar downstairs was welcoming and a good place to wind down meeting with friends before going out to dinner, and for a nightcap before heading up to bed.

The staff were attentive and helpful and very accommodating.

Only problem is the car parking, but they do offer a valet parking service for £20 which is only £2.50 more than the 24 hour rate at nearby car parks and no need to worry about collecting your car at the right time, so we'll worth it.

We stayed one night and paid the online upgrade of £18. We were given a huge room with a walk in shower that could have accommodated at least 6 ( but enough of that ) we liked the fact it was a quirky and interesting place ( it's an old hospital) we usually stay at the malmaison but we would say this is a step up in detail and quality, we enjoyed an evening dinner in the bistro and breakfast the following morning, the food quality is excellent. All the staff were friendly and attentive and we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Dear Sheppy

Thank you for your excellent review and for revealing to our TripAdvisor community the secret formula to the perfect Hotel du Vin experience.

The rooms are great and we are a in the perfect location for exploring the City, however, as you have discovered, the Hotel du Vin experience is only complete when you join us for dinner.

As you may know, our concept began in Winchester as a Bistro with bedrooms. Despite being the largest Hotel du Vin with some 66 bedrooms, culinary experiences are at the heart of our hotel and wine is the lifeblood. It's just not HdV unless you embrace this and I am delighted to hear that you did just that.

Thank you once again for kind review which I know my team were delighted to read.

Hope to see you again very soon, Tony and team

We stayed at the Hotel du Vin as we were gong to a concert at the Symphony Hall and it was a pleasant walk from there. We didn't have much time to eat beforehand but when we explained this the restaurant staff were great and served us quickly without hurrying. Food was excellent for dinner and breakfast and the room (Veuve Cliquot) was spacious with a huge bathroom and powerful shower and big bathtub.
The street was quite noisy though, but I guess that would be same anywhere in the city centre.

Room Tip: Might be worth asking if they have any quieter rooms

Dear Sue

Thanks for your wonderful review and for highlighting the good service you received.

You are right, we are in a great location. The short walk to Symphony Hall is even more interesting right now with the fantastic Frankfurt Market punctuating the journey.

I do hope you will return again in the near future. We have some excellent deals coming up in January especially that could very easliy be tagged onto a trip to some of Birmingham's fine theatres and music venues.

Many thanks again, Tony and team

Well located close to the business district, rooms are slightly expensive. Everything went well until I checked out, I had to wait ten minutes before able to check out, then at check out the staff was really rude and agressive, grabbed my card from my hand quite violently, not a thank you not a nice word. In consideration with the price.
Sorry the rooms are nice and it's funny to name all the rooms after wine, but service is too rude

We visited Hotel Du Vin Birmingham on the 21st October for Traditional Afternoon Tea to celebrate my Moms 65th Birthday.
We were directed into the 'Bubble Lounge' where out laid out table was ready and waiting for us. In the lovely surrounding of the bar, we sat on huge soft sofa's. It was very comfortable and relaxed.
I have to say that the service we received was fantastic!! All the Staff were polite, friendly and very helpful.
The waitress was attentive and helpful, she came over to apologise for the minimal delay in the sandwiches coming out to us, so upgraded our Afternoon Tea by offering us either Champagne or Cocktails. We chose the Champagne which was delightful addition.
I have to say that we noticed no delay at all and had chance to enjoy our first pot of tea whilst chatting amongst our group.
There is a nice selection of tea's, which come with unlimited refills. English Breakfast Tea, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Camomile and Green Tea.
We were brought a selection of finger sandwiches which consisted of, Smoked Salmon, Egg, Ham and Cucumber.
Along with the cake selection of Macaroons, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Brownie, Madeleine's and freshly made warm scones with clotted cream and jam - scrumptious!!
It was a lovely afternoon, and exceptionally good value for money.
I will not hesitate to return the Hotel Du Vin, Birmingham for any other special occasions.

Dear "Bunchies"

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your detailed review of our Afternoon Tea service at Hotel du Vin. We have a new Afternoon Tea Supervisor, the super smilie Aimee, and she is having a wonderful impact on the Afternoon Tea experience.

We really appreciate you sharing your experience so even more people get to know about Birmingham's best kept secret . . Hotel du Vin.

At reception the staff were always friendly and helpful. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. As usual for this chain the rooms are quirky (generally in a good way). However the one caution I would give is that there were steps between the majority of the room and the bathroom and this can be a bit of a trap when in an unfamiliar and not familiar with the location!

Dear "NJEDB10"

Thank you for posting a review on Tripadvisor about your recent and enjoyable stay at Hotel du Vin.

It's great to hear you enjoyed your stay and the service from our team.

You are right to mention the steps between bedroom and bathroom and indeed around the hotel, a legacy from this quirky listed building.

I hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back soon.

Best regards and thank you once again, Tony
