“superb hotel - but breakfast could be better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2010

impressive hotel for the money in a nice woodland setting. big foyer and reception, staff friendly. room was spotless but bed was a bit on the soft side. main issue was the unimpressive breakfast (continental with sausages and scrambled egg) but plenty of it and to say we only paid £55 for the room it was fairly good value. other gripe was paying for car parking at £7 for 24hrs stay. would reccomend this hotel though for a visit to the NEC (20 mins walk to LG arena, or 5mins in a taxi £5)

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express with colleagues to attend a seminar at the NEC. The hotel room was clean, light and airy. The bed was comfortable and the location was quiet. However, the travesty of a breakfast that was served beggars belief. It was badged as a continental style dining experience with a choice of a hot cooked breakfast from a well stocked buffet or croissants, danish, fruit, cereal and toast.

The cooked breakfast was a couple of sorry looking undercooked sausages and scrambed egg that could of bounced out of the tray it was so rubbery. This was all that was on offer as the rest of the buffet trays were empty and even the scrambled egg had only scraps left. I waited as I assumed I had arrived at bad time just before they replenished the buffet. Unfortunately no restocking occurred in the 20 minutes I waited, so I had cereal and toast instead.

After I finished I tried to tidy my tray away, but the racks were overflowing with disgarded food (scrambled egg surprisingly) and waste. I gave up trying to balance it on the only remaining bit of space. There was no-one around to complain to, so I raised it with the reception during check-out. I recommend that you avoid the breakfast dining experience unless you want to feel nostalgic for a British Rail buffet car from 1972.

The hotel was excellent, very clean, and very well equipped rooms. The staff at reception were very pleasant and helpfull.Breakfast was varied and plentiful, and overall the value for money was excellent. It was not as close as we thought to the nec, and although we could have walked there it would have been on grass verdges. We took a taxi there and back, which was fine. Excellent pub next to hotel. lovely olde worlde setting, excellent food, and reasonable prices, well worth a visit. We would not hesitate to stay at the same hotel again, we were most impressed,, and we will be recomending it to all friends looking for a hotel in that area.

We chose this hotel because it was the cheapest one nearest to the LG Arena (aka NEC Arena) with rooms still available!
The room had the usual facilities including: hair dryer, kettle, Samsung LCD tv (and remote) with excellent tv reception complete with some Freeview channels. All the equipment worked too including light bulbs and electric heater. It was a litte crowded with the ready-made sofa bed laid out!
There were mugs as well, so we could make a decent cuppa. Although only enough sugar and milk to make 2 cups, there were some extra in the reception.
Breakfast was a generous continental affair and included pastries, toast, yoghurt, cereal, apple and orange juice, tinned grapefruit and tea and coffee.
There is coin-operated internet in the reception for £1 for 20 minutes.
Parking is still £7 for 24hrs.
We had little need to interact with the staff, but those we did speak to were friendly and helpful.

Did a last minute booking here for Crufts 2010. The hotel is a short drive from the Birmingham International Train Station/ Airport and NEC. The free shuttle bus has a limited service from the station between 15 minutes and 45 minutes past the hour. but NOT all day so do ring in advance to check times. Its on a first come first served basis with no signs and as there are only approximately 7 seats, stake your claim. The same applies to the shuttle to the NEC centre from the hotel.DONT wait inside the hotel, we had problems after queuing outside only to find someone who had been waiting inside tried to pip us at the post . Stand your ground guys or you will end up getting a taxi. We got one on arrival from Birmingham International at 5.00pm and didnt want to wait around 30 minutes for shuttle bus and it cost £7.
The hotel itself is very basic but clean with quickest check in I have ever experienced! Room was ok with TV, hairdrier, Shower and tea making stuff but its very basic fittings. I know it was Crufts weekend and you do expect dogs in all the hotels but we had a sleepless night with 3 dogs in the next room barking all night, which set off a chain reaction in other adjoining rooms. Added with children running around late at night and early morning it didnt make for a very good nights sleep. to be fair this isnt a problem with the hotel more an issue with the people staying in the hotel. Come on guys remember you have neighbours!!!The breakfast was what you would expect for a express hotel. Nothing to write home about but plenty of it. I have seen better dining areas in budget hotels.Theres a pub next door that sells pub grub until 10.00pm but was very busy so eat early if you can before the rush.

I would suggest if anyone is going down on Crufts weekend to book into a Birmingham City hotel as its only a 15minute train journey and I would imagine it would be quieter. Also I noticed that the Premier Inn seems to be closer to the NEC and having stayed in both the Premier and Holiday Inn Express, I think I would plumb for The Premier as its much better value for money. The Holiday Inn was £200 a night so not exactly cheap!!

So in conclusion - it delivers what it says but thats all.I would prefer to get the early booking rates at a more upmarket hotel although you may still have the problem of dogs on Crufts weekend.

We stayed at this hotel for X factor tour at the LG Arena. The hotel itself was spotless and the room, although very small, was functional for our group of two adults and two 13 year old girls. All staff were extremely helpful and polite. Courtesy bus to train station was ideal for LG Arena and the driver was very helpful, he gave us a card to phone for a taxi on the way home, another polite driver and the charge was only £5. Breakfast was continental (cereal, toast, croissants, yoghurt, etc), everything was fresh and once again spotless. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are going to an event at LG Arena.

Reasonably new hotel. It was comfortable and keenly priced. Breakfast was ok. There was a bar which did not take cash so you needed credit card pre-authorisation beofre you could buy a drink and they ran out of red wine. The room was fine and the bed comfortable. The habit of all the electrics going off within one second of removing the card was a bit poor. It isn't that hard to give it a twenty second delay. The hotel web site suggested a daily parking charge but in the event there was not one when I stayed.
