I stayed at the Copthorne for one night during an induction course. I had read a lot of reviews on this site and was a little aprehensive about what I was going to find. It turned out to be a perfectly acceptable stay, though it really was nothing special.
The room was nice, spacious and had been fairly recently (perhaps the last 5 years) redecorated. The TV was good, and had radio built into it too. There was internet access through the TV to some sites, and it was free the night I arrived, but the following morning it appeared to want to charge me so I didn't use it again. The bed was very comfy, but the pillows were nasty foam things, not what you expect for £95 a night.
The room and bathroom were clean, though one of my colleagues was not so happy with his room in that respect. The bathroom was dated, well very dated to be honest, but I had no problems with my shower, except that it flooded the bathroom a bit, but there were plenty of towels. An iron and board, plus tea and coffee was available in the room.
As many other people have said, the lack of air conditioning is a major problem. The windows barely open because they don't want you to climb out so the room can get warm. Why on earth you would want to climb out onto a 4 lane highway I don't know. If you leave the window open the noise of the road drowns out the TV, but if you close the window and then close the secondary glazing the noise almost disappears.
The staff were friendly and helpful, though a smile would have been nice from the breakfast staff. Talking of breakfast, £15.95 for an average cooked breakfast is nothing short of daylight robbery. It was perfectly edible, but thats about it.
Finally the location is superb, close to everything.
The Copthorne is a perfectly reasonable hotel, but overpriced. The lack of air conditioning is a major problem, the dated bathroom and the bathrooms minor problems, It wouldn't take much to improve it.
