Description: Nathaniels restaurant in Moseley, Birminghams renowned bohemian quarter, is the eponymous restaurant of chef/owner Nathaniel Robinson who takes enormous care with everything he does. The modern European menu is faultlessly prepared with an a carte menu that changes seasonally. The popular lunch menu features both Light Bites and Table dHote offerings whilst the Sunday lunch cannot be bettered. The decor is elegant and modern from the smart frontage, to the intimate dining room kitted out with high-backed leather chairs, cool colours, chilled jazz, and subdued lighting that makes Nathaniels an ideal place for both business or romance.

“Birthday Disaster.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

I dined in Nathaniels on 17th April 2013 and I will never be going again. As a vegeterian, unfortunately, I expect that in most restaurants the food i'm given won't be as good as the other dishes offering meat and fish. This, I've found, is becuae a lot of chefs don't really bother to try and create something gastronomic and just see a vegeterian dish as an inconvenience and only include it because they have to. This is certainly the case here.

The service was very slow and impersonal. As we were a large group of about 12 you would think the staff would try to make you feel welcome and be attentive as the restaurant will be taing a large bill at the end of the night. However, it took over half an hour of being there that we were all served drinks - despite asking several times. When the over-priced beer did arrive, it was warm. It was an hour until starters arrived and they were all laughingly small. Some people seemed OK with the taste though. The tomato and feta tart neither tasted of feta or tomatoes bizarrley and was over-powered by a sticky balsamic reduction and rocket garish. For the money, it was a joke. We ordered a bottle of Rose wine which did arrive after a short wait amd tasted nice (cheapest bottle about £16.00).

The main course was the real let down. A stuffed courgette woth risotto was actually a pile of tomatoey stodgy risotto rice with a few ribbons of courgette draped over the top. Rubbish. It was small, tasted of very little, was lukewarm and compared to the other dishes an absolute joke. I would go so far as to say in was insulting. The chef obviouly doesn't care at all about vegeterian dishes. Having said this, the meat eaters complained too. Someone's miniscule lamb was half gristle - someone else's was tough... I had finished my main course before someone at the other end of the table even got chips for their steak.

We were not offered dessert as the whole proceeding had taken so long as it was late by this point. Main arrived about 2 hours after we arrived. Felt unwelcome basically. I could go on but there wouldn't be any point. I am going to try and forget about Nathaniels. What a pretentious, over-priced joke of a 'fine-dining' restaurant.

“Excellent food but slow service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

After struggling to find a parking space and a long walk we arrived at a small cosy restaurant. A lovely atmosphere greeted with a smile but food very slow to arrive. We had 3 courses but didn't get our main til one half hours after our arrival!
The food was hot and delicious. Very nicely presented so no complaints there but waited far too long between courses.

“A hidden (little) gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Popped in last week for a cheeky three course lunch following good tripadvisor reviews. Very professional front of house, unfussy and not pretentious but extremely experienced. Decent bottle of wine at non exorbitant rates, refreshing in more ways than one!Great atmosphere, fabulous food and excellent value for money. We will definitely be going back to try the evening menu, Sunday lunch and probably another cheeky lunch.
