“Good value and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

I have stayed in this hotel about 6 times in the past 18months. close to broad street, clean, free car parking, it also has a swimming pool and a gym, and bus stop 2mins away. TRI Fridays is 2 doors away along with a very good Indian. really good base value for money. hotel has been getting different work done every time i have been hear so i would say there has been a few changes for the better since i was last there.

We booked the 2 double rooms 20 minutes before arrived, we found the staff extremely friendly & helpful over the phone, during check in we were offered breakfast for £5.95 and given some vouchers for half price cocktails at the bar, the rooms were spacious, clean and tidy. The hotel is perfectly situated in the outskirts of the city centre, with a free carpark. we used a taxi to get onto Broadstreet which only cost £5. We will certainly been returning in the near future.

Room Tip: The decor was dated and a bit tired round the edges but was extremely clean & tidy

hotel looks nice in reception, check in went ok we recieved are key for room 208 this room was right at the back of the hotel got in there expecting to chill out after a long journey down to walk into a dirty smelly room with a broken bed, my partner ask for us to to be moved to another room we thought great thanked them for moving us only to find that bed was broken and infact to single beds pushed together after going mad we got moved for a 3rd time, still dirty but we had to put up with it as they didnt have any other room.
we then decided to have a kip before are night out to be woken by the smoke alarms going off not once but twice we then got told dont worry its one of the hairdryers that set them off WHAT A BLOODY JOKE!! food was awful and to be honest this hotel should be call faulty towers and we NOT be staying here again worse than a travel logde

Room Tip: do not book a room at this hotel

The first thing I'd like to state is that as a paying customer, regardless of how you obtained the room, you should be treated the same as every other guest. I thought this was a common idea of being a valued and paying customer but apparently I was mistaken.

Myself and 3 friends booked 2 twin rooms here last minute (on a last minute booking website) on Thursday to stay overnight on Saturday for a mates birthday. It's well within the limit of a cheap taxi for a night out (£5 to Broad Street), but also at such a distance that you don't pay through the nose, especially when it is last minute.

We were greeted politely and given the keys to our room (only one provided which proved to be tricky) and up we went. Myself and my friend had one room and the two boys the other, and we settled in. The room was small, enough room to have two single beds and a bit of space to stick your case and move around. The beds were plain and the pillows more like little cloud sacs that evaporate when you put your head on them. The room was roasting when we got there with no option to turn the radiator down and a complex window system which meant we just left the damed things alone. We paid £60 for each room, so knew it wasn't going to be amazing, but having stayed in many low budget rooms in the past I've come to know what sort of standard to expect, but this dropped below par.

The bathroom, which was so tiny you couldn't do anything in it, was horrifying. There was mould growing on the ceiling which I presumed was down to the poor extractor system which didn't even work. You walked in (i say walked in, and mean one step in) and have ths sink to the right, the toilet next to a TINY square shower cubicle. The door handle to the bathroom didn't even work. You could actually move the handle 360 degrees in rotation and the catch would not stick. The shower was complicated and stiff and the degree of error from moving the unlabelled dials which would result in going from ice water to boiling water was ridiculous. If you adjusted the pressure so you felt like you were getting more than a trickle the shower head would shoot up towards the roof and spray water all over the bathroom (I wish I was kidding).

Whilst getting ready we wanted to use the hairdryer, my friend started using it and it sparked and cut out pretty much right in her face. Thinking if we touched it again we would possibly die, we left it on the side and turned off the switch. When we went down to get ourself a taxi we commented to the staff at the desk about this problem with our room and rather than take on our information and help they pretty much made us feel stupid. The lady's response was along the lines of 'we see you booked last minute at a low rate. you really get what you paid for and were given the non-refurbished cheap rooms, what do you expect?' which to be fair was appalling. Angry and annoyed by the lack of willingness to assist in fixing the room, offering us an alternative or even saying something NICE, we left in our taxi and had ourselves a good night.

When we came back we were greeted by two men who asked us what our room numbers were and our names. This lead to a disagreement because when we checked in the lady at the desk gave the wrong rooms to the wrong people. So, the boys had our room and the other way around. This resulted in us being questioned for a few minutes as the men didn't believe that we were staying in the hotel as our room was registered under one of the boys. Because they wouldn't give us two keys for each room, one of the lads had no choice but to stay in our room because our other friend had gotten lost and they wouldn't help.

The walls are paper thin. You can hear the people on either side, the people above and the maids outside. The room got so hot during the night that you couldn't sleep with the covers on, and we couldn't get the windows open. Sweating the night away is not what I want in a room.

The next morning we knocked on our friends room and went into theirs to try and use their hairdryer. It didn't work at all. Inside their bathroom (which was slightly bigger than ours) there was a punch hole in the door which had been poorly filled with a generic polyfiller without even being sanded or painted over. The decor and standards in their room was of a similar standard to ours next door although cooler.

When walking towards the lift to check out you can see the area in which the rooms had defo had a refurb. We're not fussy people, we just wanted a place to stay after a good knees up, but after the way we were treated and the general standard to which we were left in we would never return here.

The place is a bit of a dive. It's untidy, messy, mouldy, smelly, unhygenic.

Room Tip: Refurbished rooms must be ten times better than what we were given.

Horrendous place!!!
Smelly, dirty, unhygienic, cold, damp, broken furniture, unsavory guests......see the 'Traveller photos' they don't lie!
I could write a five page essay, but it probably easier just to say, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE....you might catch it here!

The hotel is being refurbed at the moment but there were old mattresses, bricks, toilets and everything else under the stairs and in the hallways.
We were originally placed in an old room - jebus was it bad (punch hole in the wall etc). We asked to moved to the first floor to be by some friends and this was a new room (once you navigated past the workmen and corridors full for junk).
These rooms are much better and cleaner but too many corners cut (same old door on the bathroom, only painted 1 side of door etc).
We were only there for 1 night so it was passable but would not stay again or recommend for the price paid £70).
