“Good venue, handy for the theatres”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Good basic pub grub, nothing fancy in an atmospheric setting with strong connections to the theatres. A lot cheaper than a good many of the eating establishments just round the corner.

“Just how you want a pub to be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

This is a great place to meet with friends for some relaxed drinks. The front outside seating area is great in Summer and the whole place has a really nice, buzzy atmosphere. Good food, decent prices but staff could do with being a bit more friendly. It doesn't cost much to smile :)

“Keep your ducks in a row.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

This is a typical Pub, restaurant literary yards from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre along side the famous river.
Yes you can see the stars of the theatre inside the Pub after the performance, and maybe even talk to them, probably an offer of the local beer would help.
The Pub is on the right hand side of the road, and eating is available inside or out.. I did meet Judy Dench on the last visit, what an amazing actress she is, on contract with the Royal Skakespeare for years, yet still does memorable films internationally (remember James Bond)?
The menu is not large, but you can get a memorable meal at reasonable prices. Beers are extensive and the wine choice okay.
Theatre goers give it a try.

“Great location, but . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We were in Stratford to see Hamlet, all 3.5 hours of it, and decided that a good meal was required before we embarked on the marathon.

I've used The Dirty Duck down the years, mainly because it's so central and close to the theatres but also because I've been lucky enough to see a few big names relaxing there after a performance, their voices getting steadily louder as the local beers lubricated their tonsils. But on this occasion, two hours before curtain-up, the place was free of celebrities.

Some of the TripAdvisor reviews gave us pause for thought - quite a few negative comments - but on the whole we had a decent enough, if rather plain, pre-theatre dinner. We stuck to the tried and tested, namely fish and chips, mainly because there was little on the menu to excite the palate. The chips would have been cheaper at the chippie down the road and possibly more flavoursome too. The fish was edging towards being overdone - a bit dry - but the portion was generous. Ditto the chips. I like chips to be crisp and hot, but these were only very warm and crispness was lacking.

I refuse to pay silly prices for wine and so we asked for glasses of the house red. Sadly they had none left and so we went for a Malbec, more expensive but not ridiculously so. The best part of the experience was the east European waiter who was charming and attentive throughout. The restaurant (we were at the back) was quite full and the atmosphere was good. In the bars and outside, The Dirty Duck was heaving.

In short, great location. Shame about the food. And Hamlet? For me, modern dress and a location set in a school gym doesn't work. But full marks to Polonius for a great performance.

“Beware of ruining your clothes”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

We went there for a drink today and sat outside at the front. Very nice view but when we got up to go found most of our party had dark stains on our clothes. Only then did we see a sign on the wall facing inwards saying beware of berries falling and staining clothes and they accepted no responsibility!!! This is not good enough two in our party had white trousers on. They should either stop seating at the front or ensure there is adequate protection from the tree to stop the berries falling onto the seats. Because the seats are dark brown woven you can't see the stains/juice from the berries.
