“Great position but lack of staff!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

We bought a two night B&B deal with dinner on the first night. The hotel is in a great location. The room was a standard room which although small was well equipped and had a good bathroom. The bathroom was clean, but the bedroom a little dusty so may not have been used for a while. The hotel decor is pleasant in the bar and reception areas with lots of settees and seating. The dinner was good but the dining room was a rather strange layout and we were sat on a table at the far end with a huge gap between us and the rest of the restaurant. Breakfast on the first morning was very nice. Nobody appeared to be in charge though, so we sat ourselves down and eventually a waitress appeared and asked for our room no. and took an order for tea and toast. She was about to leave us when we had to ask how we ordered hot food, and at that point she said we had to order the hot food - it was as if they expected you to know how it all worked!! However, the cooked full English breakfast was very good. This cannot be said for the second morning where a hot buffet had appeared (bacon, sausages, hash browns, tomatoes, dried up mushrooms and very dried up scrrambled egg), but again nobody in attendance to explain, and when we eventually caught a waitress and asked ot order something she finally told us that there was a problem with the cookers and they could not cook anything else off the menu. We tried twice (both evenings) to order a drink at the bar and nobody was there to take our order. We were not offered any reduction in the cost of breakfast (because it was included of course).

After I had booked in, they told me that there was no electrical power to the hotel, but that it might be resumed during the evening. It was not. This meant that there was no light or other form of electrical facility, no internet (I was on business and needed to work) and no water supply (as the latter is electrically-pumped). Later that evening, I checked out and moved to a nearby hotel. Despite promises to the contrary, the hotel has not refunded my room charge or car parking fee (yes, £10 to park in their grounds) and does not reply to e-mails.

Check in was smooth with no hickups. Parking was a bit of a problem with the motel car park being full and the over flow car park being some distance away. The motel is in the CBD so this is to be expected. The car park works on the "first in, best dressed" principal. The room was a bit small but i did get the cheapest one available and i noticed on the net that the better rooms were not that much more expensive and were much better inside. You get what you pay for i guess. It was still very nice though. The bath room was good also. I did have dinner there one night and it was a bit expensive for what i got. There was free WiFi wich was very handy. I have no problems with going back there.

Booked a good deal for a long (3 nights) weekend. Very convenient central location and excellent ambiance in the public areas with log fires all day. Very quiet room at the back on the third floor. However typical problems of a hotel on a very old building. Water pressure inadequate, lift broke down and poky rooms and bathroom. Bar food good but restaurant food a bit OTT. Car park full but voucher for NCP park 300 yards away for £5 against £10 at the hotel. Given that we wanted to stay in a central atmospheric hotel a good experience.

My Daughter and Son booked us in this weekend as a surprise for my forthcoming 70 th birthday, the ( four posted bed) room was superb The staff were all very accommodating we had two very small issues which were sorted immediately, plus of course the Hotel is situated right in the centre of the town and is ideally placed

We would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel
