“2 hotels 1 good, 1 bad...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2008

Looking through the review prior to staying here (for a friends wedding) I did have some concern, why were the reviews so different, they seemed to be either great or terrible. Have just returned I can now reveal why...

We paid an agreed 'wedding' rate, but the difference in the rooms us and our friends stayed in was phenomenal. As the title says it really is like there are 2 hotels here, one really quite good and one fairly poor.

Rooms starting with 2XX or 3XX are in what seems to be a purpose built wing and are really fairly plain and at times substandard, certainly no better than the holiday inn some of the wedding party stayed in the night before. However 1XX rooms and below are great. We were treated to a suite with 2 large rooms and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom. The told us it wouldn't have a view, but the one it did have was good enough for me. For the couple looking to have the wedding here, it's a shame you didn't see the wedding suite, as that is something pretty special.

What about the customer service side? Well firstly everything about the wedding ran smoothly, but they did fall down in 3 key area's. Bookings, breakfast and checking out.

The bookings all had to be done through a central reservation number, BUT the central reservations number doesn't have details of non standard rooms, so anyone with a family had to call both hotel and reservations to try to organise their family room. In practice it's annoying and led to us having 2 rooms booked in our name...

Breakfast was very tasty, but there were too many guests and not enough staff. Tea's and coffee's were slow to be offered and slower to arrive. Again it was all down to the luck of the draw whether you got spotted or not...

Checkout - SLOW, it took about 1/2 an hour to checkout, silly things cause this like the staff only having 1 card maching and one stapler meaning clashes do occur. My wife checked in for us, but if they offer a quick checkout system, take it!

If it was just my experiences I would be looking to give 4-5 stars, as the 'minor' service issues were eclipsed by a really beautiful room. But one of my friends had a terrible room and it soured the stay completely for them, so I can see why they'd give it a 0 or 1...

Just be aware and book the nicer rooms!!!

My boyfriend and I are looking for venues for our wedding next year and after looking around the Welcombe hotel added it to the short list. We decided that it would be a good idea to spend a night there to see the rooms etc before we got in touch with the wedding organisers so we could see what a night at the Welcombe was really like!

The hotel is stunning and in beautiful surroundings but I am sad to say we will not be holding our wedding there.

We arrived at the hotel and had to wait 45 minutes to check in, we were then sent down to our room to find that it has not yet been cleaned! (It was almost 3pm).

We went back to reception who managed a simple 'sorry' and asked us to wait half and hour or so for it to be cleaned. We decided to go and have some lunch in the bar. We ordered 2 bagels - which took a further 45 minutes to arrive. After waiting 30 minutes I went to ask the barman where the food was - to be told - he was trying to find the second bagel as they only had one to hand! The food was very disappointing - the bagel was so hard that I had to leave it.

Our room was finally ready - but again so very disappointing! We had paid full wack for a tiny room, with mould around the windows and in serious need of some TLC. We were at the far side of the hotel and I think it's simply forgotten about by the hotel staff - when I walked down to the room at 5pm there was still a breakfast plate out from the morning.

When we spoke to the staff they did not offer any kind of solution and when we came to check out the next day - they agreed that they would not come back either had they had the same experience as us.

All in all a very disappointing experience.

The only plus side - dinner and breakfast were OK - although the restaurant lacks atmosphere and is totally silent.

My recommendation - don't bother with this hotel.

Overall this hotel is above average.
The spa is so relaxing and the best thing.....not too busy so we had a lot of time to enjoy the facilities.
Make sure you have trousers and shoes for the restaurant as they have a strict dress code and there is nowhere else to eat other than the restaurant.
Beautiful grounds and the golf course looks impressive.

Just come back from a weekend at the Menzies Welcombe and have to say that the reports I had read were not fair.
Great hotel with some great staff. Food was above average for a hotel.
We arrived Saturday lunchtime and although our room wasn’t ready we were invited to go and use the facilities. Had a great time chilling out in the spa. The best I have seen in years.
Went back to the hotel and checked into our room. Great view of the gardens. TV was a little bit old although we didn’t use it much.
All the staff I came in contact with were very pleasant, especially the Spanish receptionist and the restaurant staff.
There was a wedding going on during our stay although it didn’t really impact on us infact we enjoyed seeing the fire works on both evenings.
Will return although we had a great deal on the room.

For a 4 star hotel, we were pretty dissapointed when we arrived. The actual hotel was stunning, beautiful. Once we arrived at reception to check in, there was no good afternoon, can i help you.. it was 'You checking in'. The staff checking us in looked us up and down like we were scum. We were not made to feel welcome at all. All because we were a young couple and not a middle aged one! Once we got to the room, we read that they stop serving lunch at 2pm, when we were told to check in!! So we spent £30 on room service as we had a 2 and a half hour drive with no food. All we had was a burger and lasagne!! The room was not actually that clean, with dust on the windowsil and mould on the tiles in the bathroom. There was also dirt near the bath in the tiles. Dinner came, and we were refused as we didn't have tie and evening wear, as we were only there for the night!! Starving and obviously not impressed with the hotel we had to venture into the city centre for our food- boy are we glad we did,the restaurant was so nice, the people so helpful, and we weren't cooped up in one room. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone looking for excellent customer service, which you would expect in a 4 star hotel!! The only good thing about it was how it looked on the outside and the swimming pool!

Stayed for Golfing Weekend with my wife The Hotel was good although the service was a little slow but this was only a very minor fault we were on holiday so whats the rush. We had upgrade on our room since our original room was not ready which we found to be on a very high standard. The staff were good and very pleasant it pays to be nice to people and they usally nice back. Golf course was really good the club house was to a high standard. Would like to go back very soon

They need to do some serious work with the staff. Made to feel like every small request/query was a major imposition to them. Never experienced so much huffing and puffing on reqesting a little margerine with breakfast!
Rooms also very average.
Beautiful house though with lovely grounds so they could turn it around...
