“And a new favourite was born!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

Actual 'proper' Chinese food in Newcastle. Totally amazing. Pearl tea has made my entire week. How on Earth have I not eaten here before? Don't expect silver service but do expect the best Chinese food around.

“lovely food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

came here with my partner on Monday with high expectations. when we first arrived we sat at the only free table in the room and waited ten mins for any kind of response from the waiting staff. Finally we were presented with menus and our drinks orders were promptly received. my partner ordered from the lunch menu a starter of duck wraps followed by a Chilli beef stir fry. i opted for the honey pork and fried rice with some wontons on the side. all the food arrived in super quick time and was fantastic! the atmosphere is very fast paced and hectic but in a good way . would recommend to anyone after really good Chinese food and anyone who hasn't got much time and needs an express lunch.

“The best Chinese cafe anywhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

This is not to be confused with somewhere you would go for a romantic meal or special occasion, as it seems the previous reviewer has done. I have eaten here for years and the food is consistently excellent. The prices are similar to your average takeaway, but it comes on a plate with chopsticks and a smile if you talk to the waiters. It is not fine dining, for which you can pay 3 - 4 times as much and have a dozen other restaurants on Stowell Street to choose from (Landmark is the best, but that's another review). I have tried most of the menu and everything comes quickly, piping hot and delicious. We often have a main course and drink chinese tea and for £7 - £10 leave within 40 mins having had an excellent meal. A lot of Chinese students eat here which is testament to its authenticity and value for money.

If you want a quick excellent meal before the olympic football, cinema or theatre then this is the place to go. There is no license, so soft drinks only. Be adventurous with help from the waiters and try those bits that other places don't serve.

Can thoroughly recommend

“Great Little Cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

For what it is, Chinatown Express can not be faulted.

Great food, fast and extremely cheap.

The westernized Chinese fare is as good as you will find. However the traditional dishes are a good way to taste China without the 12 hour flight. Put away the squeamish side of you and ignore what the protein is and there are some real gems (Tripe and liver noodles one of the nicest dishes I've eaten)

Good selection of teas too
