“DO NOT STAY HERE - CHEAP AND NOT CHEERFUL”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2010

I read the reviews and booked this hotel for a business trip. All the descriptions and pictures are hype. The only positive aspect to this hotel is the friendly staff but it is not enough to make up for:

1) The Noise - trucks delivering goods all night long; garbage trucks emptying large industrial bins all night long; cleaning trucks at 4am - you might as well sleep outside

2) Things are always broken - the showers, the washer, the dishwasher, the wireless

3) The old, musty furniture and pillows

There are other much nicer places that cost the same or less!

I assure you that all pictures are accurate and recent. I would be delighted to show our apartments to anyone- please just phone up and we will show you as many rooms as possible! In common with any inner city and central business district there are indeed deliveries- but this is a pedestrianised street therefore a lot quieter than most city locations. There are exceptionally good sound deadening windows and doors throughout the building. We purchased the hotel in mid April 2010 and although there are a few windows which don't seal fully we are currently addressing every apartment with a redecorate, deep clean and full maintainance. This program extends to our reception area and includes the provision of secure storage and luggage areas. The furnishing is all rather recent, pillows are always changed, linen is always changed and we always have extra upon request at any time. It would appear that you stay regularly in order to qualify that things are "always" broken. Things do break (as in any hotel ) but we get them repaired very quickly. If a guest experiences problems (and we are told about them) I would certainly move them to another room.

Very centrally located on high street, perfect for easy access to shops, bars and clubs.
Well equiped apartment, very spacious and funished nicely. No DVD in room however provided with Playstation from Reception. Receptionist, Katy, was very friendly on check in, recommended a nice place to eat and also booked table and taxi. She was very helpful and had good local knowledge... just what you need when you haven't visited a city before.
Room itself, 405, was very spacious plenty of space for our group of 5.
Overall we had a really nice stay at the apartments and would definately go back!

Although we bought this in April 2010 I'm pleased to see this feedback. These apartments are are currently getting a makeover and the reception areas are being revamped. Thank You

booked for the Northumberland Street option for Monday and Tuesday nights as it was a flying visit for daughters graduation. We had previously stayed in Quayside apartments. This was huge - our family were really impressed. Huge living room/kitchen to the front which was noisy but very interesting and quiet bedrooms to rear. Comfortable bed, lovely and warm in some very cold weather, and the location is amazing everywhere seemed to be 2 minutes away. Had a minor problem with non delivery of breakfast pack but staff response was excellent. I do think these apartments have a very hard life and ours was so big it must be very time consuming to maintain it. We were very pleased and will be back although I think we might avoid weekends given some of the other reviews.

  • Liked — space, location and warmth
  • Disliked — some paintwork needs touched up - this is minor

Fantastic location. Although the website we booked the apartment with had failed to inform the hotel that there were 4 of us, we were swiftly booked into a 2 bedroomed apartment as booked.

The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. If you are going out in the evening plan where you are going in advance, as it is easy to get lost.

The apartment was 5 star + extremely clean, and my friends and I are definately going to visit again.
Thankyou for a fantastic weekend

Facilities and locaton great, well appointed and good size room, room starting to look a bit shabby as expected when in use 24/7.

Location may be great however as others have said the noise at night is a nightmare. Windows aren't good enough to block out the noise. Between the hours of 1AM until 6AM it is like the end of the world the other side of the window even on Monday/Tuesday nights .... dread to hear a friday or saturday night. In between the screams/shouting/football songs/fights etc was the hundreds of delivery trucks that descend on the street with engines revving, reverse tones, shouting drivers and the unloading of goods.

Once all this finally ends at about 6 in the morning and you think you may get some sleep the bells on the nearby church start to ring every 15 minutes.

Oh and the hotel permenatlly smells of grease/fat because of the fastfood shops on the ground floor!

We bought this property in April 2010, several of the sound deadening window seals had indeed failed- many of these have now been replaced and this job should be complete by June. The street is in fact a pedestrian zone (one of very few around the city) although there is the usual city bustle we are in one of the quietest parts of the city. Where the windows have been serviced you hear hardly anything. In terms of food I have had discussions with the shops below and they now have carbon filters and a much uprated extract system. This does seem to have cured that. We are in the process of revamping the interior of the apartments and the reception area currently- the gleaming new place should be ready by June. If you want to have a look - please feel free to ask.

We stayed here for 2 nights in October for the great north run. The location of the hotel is fabuloush, right in the centre of Newcastle, close to Haymarket , Monument etc.

The appartments themselves are immaculately clean and very well equipped. Flat screen TV's in both the living room and bedroom, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, microwave etc.

Unfortunately, the only downside was quite a significant one. At 3am when revellers were leaving night clubs, the street below was a cacophony of noise. It honestly sounded like morris dancers were in an angry battle with a steel band. And this wasnt just one night - it also happened after the run on the Monday morning ... after 13 miles you'd have expected to be able to sleep through anything but even on the 4th floor with the windows shut it was just too noisy to ignore.

It's a shame, I really liked the appartments, but I certainly wouldnt stay there again.

  • Liked — The facilities were excellent
  • Disliked — The noise from the street below

Although we just bought the hotel in April 2010 I am pleased you like the location and the accomodation. We have begun some improvements beginning with the windows- these are really effective sound deadening windows but the seals have not been serviced- this is something we have addressed in the majority of the apartments making them a lot quieter. We are also improving the reception and luggage storage areas - I hope if you do return that you arrange to come and have a look prior to a booking- recently we have had an accordion player outside- and inside you can hear hardly anything at all. All in all we are pleased to say everything mentioned in negative reviews IS being jumped on- strenuously!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2008

We stayed at these apartments for three nights over New Year. Newcastle is my home town and therefore I knew we would not be disappointed with the location. We weren't. Great for the shops, bars, restaurants and transport. 100yds from the monument metro and a taxi company (details given in the hotel/apartment info) who come pick you up the end of the street. The good points to add to the location is the standard of the apartments themselves. Well appointed and quite large if you base it on the size you would find the average hotel room. They were clean (although could be better in some areas) and well equipped. TV's in both the lounge and bedroom, play station available from reception if needed. Ironing board and iron and a fully fitted kitchen. The only thing i didnt find was a teapot. The bathroom though small was clean and everything worked. Clean towels every two days. Hot water all the time and heating was instant as there were heaters in the lounge, bedroom, corridor and a heated towel rail in the bathroom. Great.

The bad points - we had apartment 301 on the third floor and it faced the back. I take note of the other reviewers who have mentioned the noise being on the front of the building etc. and i do agree this would be so as the delivery vans use the pedestrian access as their loading bays before the shops open. Facing the back however meant a view from each window of AC units and rooftops and a view of the stair case windows which remained lit 24/7. We therefore had to close the blinds in the bedroom to block out the light. We are both able bodied and quite fit adults and the climb to the reception is via a quite steep set of stairs. Lift access thereafter to all floors. Reception were polite and nothing more. They didnt acknowledge us whenever we came in or out. Access is via a key swipe entry so i guess they trust their security system.

All the apartments have door closers and this made the doors bang everytime some one entered or left an apartment. The Floors in the apartments (apart from the bedrooms) are laminate and this also added to noise above and i am sure what we were creating for those below us. We were there for New Years Eve and the noise was horrendous. I totally understand that this was out of the control of the hotel but the logistics of the building and apartments did not help the matter. The noise of the shouting above and below, the banging of the doors and the general behaviour of the other guests (having a good time) did not make the stay a pleasant one. My other little niggles were - no batteries in one of the tv handsets. One worked both so all was fine but why have too then? Only one bedside table in a double room, and the one that was there had an inch of dust over it. A desk lamp in the lounge didnt work and the carpet in the bedroom had NOT been vaccumed since the last occupant. All not the end of the world but even a travelodge at half the price per night would get these things right I feel.

I dont think we would stay here again. Been there and done it - enjoyed the stay despite my review but I agree again with the other reviewer that there are better options in Newcastle unless being on Northumberland Street is an absolute must.

Stayed December 2007
