Main rule, It's a backpackers hostel, not a hotel. You will sleep on a bunkbed in a dorm room. It's somewhere to rest your eyes on your travels. The price is cheap, its basic, its safe, GREAT location in the middle of the city centre.
3 of us stayed in a 10 man dorm, and the hostel was not full, staff appeared to allocate people to separate rooms to allow groups to have some privacy, rather than bundle everyone into a few rooms. We had no-one else in our room apart from the night before the great north run, when the whole place was full. They were gone by the next afternoon.
Hostel had a nice amount of cool, young trendy people, didn't feel cramped. And generally they weren't all drunk. Nice mix of girls and guys staying.
Staff were great, very friendly.
Bed linen ready on arrival, the room had obviously been cleaned. Seen the cleaners working every day, reassuring to see them mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms, bathrooms were clean. Emptied out our rubbish every day.
The bunk beds are basic, but generally comfortable. You get what you pay for.
Stumbled in drunk many a night and the staff didn't bother us as long as we didn't bother them or other guests. Didn't hear much noise from other guests or the traffic outside.
Bathrooms are not on every floor never mind every dorm room, we were top floor and had to traipse down two flights of stairs and several corridors to get to the bathroom.
It was mostly young people, as travelers and backpackers generally are. I would not recommend this place for families, especially children, couples or older people.
Alot of guests were drunk, there was at least one hen party when I was staying. Would I want to sleep here whilst sober... No probably not. I also would not stay here on my own.
Should you stay here? Yes, it serves a particular purpose. Should you want somewhere to crash during your mad drinking weekend. Or if in a group for a banter filled trip.
Higher floors have more stairs, no toilets.
