Not least the most confusing item is the title of this page (it's backpackers, not pacers...). It turns out I believe I have visited this hostel twice: once in 2006 as a solo traveller for a concert, and this time in 2013 for a stag do as a group of 10. At about £26/night for a shared room of 10, on a top floor, 2 flights to a toilet/shower, value is not inherent in the room. What you pay for is location: 3mins from the train station and surrounded by bars. There are some nice service touches - free tea, coffee and toast at all hours - and I guess hosting large parties is a niche talent. The £20 damage/good behaviour bond was a disappointment, not least since I checked out early and was thus expected to choose a friend to receive it on my behalf
But, again, if you are catering to large parties I assume this needs to be built into ones business model. That said, the average I give it works out at 3.6/5 so I will round up. If you are travelling as a large group it will suffice (the upshot of being on the top floor meant no passing noise) with the caveat of their prohibitive deposit, but if you were travelling alone you would do well to shop around first as location and the tea/coffee are the only things going for it... Both in 2006 and now... But still, worthy a 4/5 as specialist accommodation.
