“Small but interesting”

Not ideal if you have a problem with stairs but that can't be helped. Pretty gardens & interesting & informative exhibition.

“Over priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

For the size of the house and gardens the entry charge is not in line with other attractions owned by the Trust. Gibside is £7.50 entry for a adult and there is a days worth of sights to see, George Stephenson's birthplace is £2.00 adult entry and is slightly smaller than Washington Hall, so why Washington Hall charge £5.50 adult entry escapes me?

“Day trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

On a coach trip we stopped to look at this National Trust property, we found it interesting although the house is not the original one being built on top of this, we enjoyed looking round the gardens and the Nuttery, we had tea in the friends tea room and it was a very reasonable cream tea for two with china cups etc. it was an enjoyable visit.

“A Small but Interesting Historic Building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

A Jacobean Mansion with Gardens and Nuttery, the Ancestral Home of the Washington family from whom sprang George Washington, the first President of the United States. Don't be mislead by the address displayed on Trip Advisor, the place is located in the original Washington Village, part of Washington New Town which is around seven miles south of Newcastle and, technically, part of the City of Sunderland. It is easy to discern the mode of living in times past from the heavy furniture and kitchen equipment on display and the guides are very good. Refreshments are available at reasonable cost. All in all a pleasant way to spend an afternoon
