“Jesmond Dene House is a sensational hotel, with immaculate attention to detail.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2009

Myself and my wife decided to stay at Jesmond Dene House for a recent trip to visit friends. We were recommended the hotel by friends who raved about the quality.

On arrival you're struck by the impressive facade of the building which has managed to retain its historical features, and yet complimented the building with subtle contemporary details.

As we entered the hotel we were immediately attended to. The concierge organized for our bags to be taken to our room and we were personally shown to our room, with the layout and services explained to us.

The room was exquisite.

We opted to stay in one of the deluxe rooms, and the sense of occasion is impressive. The room boasted some high quality fittings, furnishings and had a great view over the surroundings gardens. Its the small details that impressed - classical music playing on the radio as we entered, a bowl of fresh fruit and personal welcolme note hand written by the management. The figs are superb that they provided.

Although the hotel has obviously been renovated - the character of the building shines through. Our room had the original panelled ceiling and architectural details that can sometimes be lost in renovation. The fittings, materials and finishes are all of the highest quality.

The bathroom was a marvel, and my wife decided to delay dinner while she took a bath! With panelled ceilings, beautiful fittings , a 12ft mirror between original panelling the bathroom was a thing to behold.

My wife pointed out again the attention to detail - organic soaps and high quality toiletries.

So the room and service is excellent.

Breakfast gives the option of a full english or a continental (or both!) We sat in the garden room for this. This garden room is a contemporary addition to the hotel, using traditional materials. Working in design I like to scrutinize the details, but this room again has been meticullously thought out.

The staff are friendly and attentive even at 7am. The food at breakfast caters for all tastes, with only the best on offer. We both liked the views out of the sun room, and thought that it created just the right ambience. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast both mornings.

There are many things that impressed us about this hotel. We didn't eat our evening meal in the hotel as we were dining with friends elsewhere, however im sure this is the same high standard.

Whilst wandering around the hotel and grounds, the sense of occasion, the fittings, the atmosphere, the staff are all superb.

We have been fortunate to stay in some of the finest hotels around the world, and i remarked to my wife that this is one of the best, and its all down to the details and the way the staff cater for the guests.

I always try and find something that is amiss during my stay at hotels. The only thing I would say is that the small shelf for toiletries inside the walk in shower, the spacings on the grate are too large to place the shampoo bottles easily, but thats it!

We would higly recommend Jesmond Dene House!

My partner, mum and I decided to go to Jesmond Dene House for dinner after friends told us how good it was.
Upon arrival, we knew we were in for a treat. The concierge greeted us and took us through to the bar area. It was a Thursday night so there were only another 6-8 tables being used. The staff were very attentive in talking us through menu and helping with some wine choices. I ordered sea-bass and the others had belly pork, with starters and desserts. The pre-courses were also a lovely addition to the meal and all the food was simply wonderful. At £25 a head for their new market menu, it was a steal too. We'll be back and would highly recommend.

Being long-standing devotees of 21 Queen Street, Cafe 21 etc my husband and I eagerly anticipated a stay at Jesmond Dene House to celebrate my birthday. The booking process was great - I phoned and explained our room requirements (deluxe double, big bed, good view), which were dealt with in a friendly & efficient manner, and I got a prompt email confirmation of our £355 dinner, bed & breakfast inclusive package. First impressions of the hotel were great - it was getting dark when we arrived and it looked so bright and cosy. We were welcomed warmly, checked in smoothly and shown around our room so we knew how everything worked etc. We loved the room (4) which, like the entire hotel, was decorated and furnished beautifully in a very relaxed style. It was also spacious and peaceful with a leafy view from the large bay window. Loved the Pure digital radio and little extras such as fresh fruits, bottles of water, glossy mags etc. The bathroom was fabulous with an enormous bath, walk-in shower, lovely fittings, boatloads of towels and toiletries and even a snazzy rubber duck! We went down for our 9pm dinner and were again welcomed warmly and offered drinks in the gorgeous lounge whilst we chose from the menu and got stuck into the nibbles. I won't describe the food in detail, suffice to say that it was wonderful, as we'd expected from the people responsible for our favourite restaurant in the world, Cafe 21! The food is fine dining, very much like the old 21 Queen Street used to be, with amuse-bouches and pre-desserts served, a choice of breads offered etc. The service was exemplary but never stuffy, which is typical of all Terry Laybourne's establishments past and present. The next morning, we enjoyed the generous breakfast - there is a big buffet of lovely cold food and drinks (including champagne!), then you can choose a freshly-cooked hot dish as well. Check out was smooth and easy and there were no surprises on the bill.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first stay at Jesmond Dene House and only wished it could have been longer. It is a unique place, a bit quirky, luxurious yet relaxed, and the complete antithesis of sterile, corporate chain hotels. We can't wait to return.

Having had some delicious meals in the restaurant we decided to hold our daughters wedding reception at JDH. What a wonderful day! The attention to detail by the staff made the event - and breakfast the next morning was a feast in itself

Read that the hotel was highly rated, but in reality thought it had some way to go !! First room was small, and had a fire door in the corridor outside ,which closed with a loud bang every time it was used.Reception changed rooms for us without a problem, had a larger room but the lighting in this hotel is terrible !!! Rooms are dark and gloomy ,impossible to read easily;even the public areas have a sense of gloom with this reduced lighting everywhere !! They should get a lighting designer in to do this properly.Didn't eat in the hotel at night as it was in the week and the restaurant was empty every night, and lacked atmosphere.
Breakfast was excellent, one of the best I have ever had in a hotel.Fantastic concierge,a perfect Geordie welcome!Overall ,pleasant but nothing exceptional, have stayed in similar hotels for less, with a far better experience !!

  • Liked — Fantastic breakfasts,great concierge !!
  • Disliked — Dark,gloomy rooms.Overpriced small rooms.
