The food at Cal’s Own is mouth-wateringly delicious.
The fact you can choose from four bases and pick your own toppings rather than pick something off a set menu is really appealing. These were no ordinary run of the mill high street takeaway pizza toppings, these babies have been prepared and thought about. I chose a white pie with mushrooms, hot Italian sausage and spinach and it was absolutely wonderful. My boyfriend had a cheese pie with Ndija Calabria (a type of spicy sausage) and artichoke hearts and was really nice too.
This place doesn’t have a licence but you can take in your own alcohol for a corkage fee of £1 per person, or they do have a good selection of soft drinks available. They do a takeaway service as well so if you couldn't get seated it wouldn't matter so much.
We finished off with sharing a massive slab of homemade New York cheesecake which was rich and luxurious. All in all, excellent.
I would say that I think this place is all about the food, there is background music going and the staff are friendly, but as you don’t reserve tables and it’s quick-ish turnaround it’s not somewhere to go for a party atmosphere, but if you’re a lover of food don’t let that comment put you off going. It’s all about good, tasty food and they have that in abundance and do it very, very well.
