A great historical tour through a tunnel that runs under Newcastle that was originally for coal but then sheltered people from the bombs of the Second World War.

“Time travel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

This is a great tour for everyone whether you're from the area or generally interested in history. The guide covers why it was built, who built it, why it closed, tragic tales. They also cover why it was reopened as an air raid shelter during WWII .

This is a great magical piece of local history everyone should know about.

£5 p/person, two hours, friendly guides, easy parking (80p p/hr)

Excellent

“Excellent guides and great value for money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

I took my parents as part of their Christmas pressie in Jan 2014. I wasn't massively keen on going myself but glad I did. The guide was great, she had such passion for the history of the tunnel and Ouseburn it really reflected throughout the tour. She had some great local stories and it was an interesting tour that lasted more like 3 hours than 2. Not bad for the price!! Would recommend to everyone.. all ages.

“Location, history, engineering - the best in Newcastle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

Excellent 2 hour tour led by really knowledgeable local enthusiasts.
Small tour group (12 people) meant that no one was far from the guides and everyone benefited from the stories and history.
An amazing feat of engineering to solve a local enconomic problem in the early 19th century - visit to find out more!
The Ouseburn area is also of interest, for it's history and to see how it is starting to regenerate.
Ideal for adults and families looking for something more meaningful- it really is a memorable trip.
