Off the beaten track but easy to find. Make the effort to go on a tour of this tunnel. Originally built to move coal, adapted in WW2 as a bomb shelter.
The history beneath our feet.
Well presented, great tour

“Great way to learn some history about Newcastle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

This tour was excellent and very interesting. Both tour guides were very knowledgeable, but the lead guide, Kerry was so interesting to listen to as she knew so much about the history of the tunnels and what was happening in Newcastle during these times. You could see how passionate she was about the subject. It was really good to see so much of the tunnels and to get an idea about what it must have been like for the families who used it as an evacuation shelter. Both my husband and me found the event fascinating and would recommend it to anyone interested in history. It only costs £5 so is really good value. The guides do an amazing job on a voluntary basis, and have so much knowledge. The Trust is very lucky to have such talented people helping out and sharing their knowledge with others.

“Well worth a visit - superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Booked a tour for myself and seven friends, who all very much enjoyed the tour. The tour was fascinating and really made you think about what life in the tunnel must have been like for those sheltering down there during the war. I was pretty nervous about whether it would be claustrophobic in the tunnel but it was fine for me and my friends, as it doesn't feel as small as it looks on some of the pictures. I'd definitely go again! :)

“Underground Adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

I've lived in Newcastle my entire life and had never visited the Victoria Tunnel, I booked a couple of friends and I onto a tour and we weren't disappointed.

Our tour guide, Kerry, was very knowledgeable and engaging and was happy to answer any questions that we had. It was really interesting tour for a really small cost, it's not just walking through the tunnel, it's also a local history lesson. We had a bit of a giggle too. I would definitely recommend this tour, unless you're claustrophobic, then maybe not so much.

To all you Geordies out there... it's on your doorstep, and you'll find out a bit of local history... you should definitely give it a go.

“Fantastic”

Brilliant. Can't recommend enough. Really interesting. Great guides and small groups. Would recommend to all apart from those who have a real aversion to enclosed spaces. A hidden gem.
