Seven of us went on the guided tour of the Victoria Tunnel on Saturday. It was a fascinating and very enjoyable two hours - all credit to Kerry who led the tour, and Claire who was the back up guide - she was great fun, witty. kowledgeable and obviously very passionate about the whole area. I would highly recommend this as both an educational and fun visit.

Tours are carried out by enthusiastic and easy to talk to tour guides who are able to answer any questions. The tunnel acted as an air raid shelter in World War II and the guides on the tour have experience of talking to those with first hand experience. There's a lot of flexilbility in the tours as well, with different length tours being offered. The 2 hour tour starts with a walk along the Ouseburn river bank, giving context to the area and the regeneration it has undergone in recent years. Plenty to do and see in the surrounding area with music venues, a children's book museum, indepedent cinemas/ art galleries and loads of pubs!
Small fee of £4 for 2 hour tour is definetly well worth it.

great tour that gives you an insight into wot it was really like in Byker in the Victorian times and how the tunnel had a huge impact on life in Newcastle from the coal it was built to move to the lives it saved in the war as an air raid shelter.. The tour guides really bring it to life with the knowledge and passion for local history and knack for story telling, wether you're born and bred or just visiting the city you won't be disappointed..
