“Just below average Wetherspoons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Been to this Wetherspoons on numerous occasions, centre of Newcastle and very busy on football days as its only a good ten minute walk to St James's . It's absolutely crowded on a match day. Building is on two levels and shows live football. The entire premises is a bit on the tired size, probably because it is used so frequently. Wouldn't be my first choice for a meal because of this fact. Ok fo a drink, although for ale drinkers, the quality would not get into the good beer guide

“Geet big Weatherspoons needs some TLC”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

I used to go here quite a bit, mainly to meet mates from Durham before the match.

It's an impressive building from the outside but on the inside its in bad need of a refit - it's looking very tired. This is a shame because its got the potential to be a great venue with its warren of rooms spread over 2 floors, that are connected by quite a grand staircase.

I've never eaten here so can't comment about the food but they have a good selection of beers which are well priced when compared to the other bars on this street! The staff are also friendly enough unless your unfortunate to have some dippy student types on bar duties when you go - some of them don't know their [--]
from the elbow.

Go on, don't listen to me try it for yourself

“Great selection and prices, needs refreshing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

The food is ok-ish (value for money but nothing exciting) but the beer selection and its prices are just fantastic - this is what makes us come back every time. However, the place is in bad need of a big restoration. Friendly staff that helped us to watch a specific game on telly as we were there. Quite a typical Weatherspoons.

“Nice Meeting Place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

As with all JD Weatherspoon/ Lloyds No 1 Bars, the menus are pretty standard throughout. The food quality, once again like all pubs in this chain, depends on what you choose. For example, you can't go wrong with the breakfasts, but the steak quality varies quite wildly. Sometimes you might get a beautifully done piece of meat as you ordered it, other times it comes as a 'burnt offering' even though you ordered Medium Rare. Sometimes, they are juicy and tender, other times it's like chewing on an old leather sole. What I'm saying is that Quality Control with regard to the supply and cooking of certain food items seems to be sadly lacking.

Food aside, as always Weatherspoons come up trumps when it comes to the selection of beers and lagers on sale, and in the main these are well kept. If you do manage to be unfortunate enough to catch the bottom of the barrel when you order a real Ale, the staff at the Union Rooms are always accommodating and have no problem in either changing the barrel (if another one is ready) and pulling a fresh pint, or offering you an alternative.

The surroundings in the Union Rooms are beginning to look a little 'dog eared' but it is generally clean and tidy and staff are quick to clean and wipe the tables after people have left.

As a regular (monthly) visitor to the Union Rooms, I would recommend it as a meeting place for lunch to see friends/ business colleagues and maybe grab a bite or two to eat.

Will I return? Yes, I'll continue to visit monthly as I have done for the past few years now.

“A refurbished Victorian classic gentlemens' club”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

The Union Rooms started life in the last 19th century as a classic gentlemens' club for Newcastle worthies from the commercial and professional city at that time. It is now a Wetherspoon's pub, unusually on two levels.

Our small party of business colleagues had dinner at 1900hrs on the first floor; food and drinks were provided promptly by friendly staff, and were of the consistently high Wetherspoon's quality. The Union Rooms are oppposite Newcastle Central Station, and are well worth a visit for a quiet meal or drink.

This venue should be listed under pubs/restaurants, as opposed to an attraction.
