“Never fails.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

Our go-to restaurant in Newcastle, ate all over town but nowhere (maybe Cafe Vivo) really comes close to Electric East. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, if you haven't been then you should try it. I always go for 3 or 4 Asian tapas, portion sizes are perfect and you get a taste of everything, beef rendang is my favourite, scallops with peanut caramel are great, soups are always amazing, you can order anything from the menu and you wont be disappointed.

“Electrifying food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

Great eclectic restaurant surrounded by dull glass office buildings and hotels but once you are inside you are in a completely different world. Service is fast and furious but friendly. Food is exciting with very different spins on the norm. Wine list is good and not over priced. Good cocktail list and beers.

The owner a lovely warm chap with pork pie hat and round glasses is genuinely friendly and cares hugely that you are having a lovely time. As proof of this, we visited in person earlier in the day ahead of our dinner to re-confirm reservation and saw this odd guy clearing out cigarette stubbs from the planters around the restaurant. He turned out to be the owner (just referenced to) and with this level of personal attention and care you are almost guaranteed a great time and experience.

It's a fun, buzzy place with great food, service and well worth a visit. Book ahead. It's very very popular. And justly so.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

We were kindly given a voucher from our niece at Christmas for this restaurant she rates highly, entitling my husband and I to a starter and main course. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming on arrival. My husband had the chicken satay and sweet and sour pork fillet. The satay was small, too sweet with only a few chopped peanuts on the side. The fillet was dry with only a watery dressing rather than a sauce and all sweet and no sour. I had the sizzling beef which seemed to have different grades of meat, some chewy, some tender but very little seasoning. Followed by the lamb shank which was delicious in a rich sauce laid on a bed of sliced boiled potatoes and crunchy green beans, with rice and perfectly cooked. We ordered side dishes of chips in curry sauce and special rice. Tiny portions as previously stated. The rice seemed to have been cooked or dressed in tomato juice with a couple of slivers of chilli, nothing very special at all.

The restaurant itself seemed grubby and in need of a deep clean. We won't be back.

“Great Experience & Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

Great food, great choice, great surroundings, good service, reasonable value. Well worth a try if in the area and enjoy Asian cuisine. As authentic and tasty Asian cuisine as I've had in Europe. Even the dessert was good.

“Small portions of salty food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

Service was very slow and surly, waitress avoided serving us any wine menus so didn't bother. Starters were eventually served not very hot , very small portions and over seasoned.
Mains were surprisingly ordinary after descriptions and we have eaten such really tasty Vietnamese food elsewhere. The batter was oily and sauces salty and devoid of any real flavours. Owner was gushing but uninterested in our real satisfaction. Can't be bothered to even contemplate returning.
