“A great place for a walk out, regardless of the time of year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

There'll be many pictures of Belsay Hall and gardens in all its glory in the summer - but its still a good outdoor walk out whatever the time of year.

We come here often. Easter no exception. Its likely already been mentioned but there is nearly always something going on - Easter was an treasure hunt and a chance to taste warming mead.

On a cold March day the only disappointment was there wasn't enough room in the coffee shop. More flasks of hot chocolate next time.

Worth signing up for the English Heritage membership as once you do, you can go as many times in a year as you like - plus you get access to all the other English Heritage locations.

I visited her with the kids and we all enjoyed it with the kids enjoying running around the gardens and exploring the castle especially. Will definitely have to revisit in summer !

“Tranquil, atmospheric quarry garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

The house is interesting, but unfurnished. They have periodic displays housed in the hall, which creates a better ambience.
The formal gardens and park scenery are excellent, but my favourite is the quarry garden found en route to the derelict castle. The castle is fun and usually a great hit with kids, there have been re enactments held there in the past, again a favourite with kids. Nice tea room and gift shop.

“The best day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Belsay Hall is one of our favourite properties and has something for everyone. Take the dog, take the kids - there are some stunning gardens and a super wooded walk over the lake. The house and castle are interesting and you can climb onto the roof of the castle for some fabulous views. Our children love climbing the narrow stairs to the roof. The cafe is nice and there's a picnic area or you can choose to go to the Blacksmiths cafe in Belsay instead. I see a nice little shop has opened up there too which is worth a look for gifts. Belsay is also a short drive from Bolam lake, so if you have some time to spare you can drop in there too. We always enjoy our time at Belsay Hall - it is well worth a trip and if you are a Heritage member it's free! It also has some excellent events throughout the year from classic cars to haunted walks.
