“Mostly good but tired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014 via mobile

Our trip to Newcastle was enhanced by a stay at Malmaison where we found a very comfortable room with an amazing view of the Millenium Bridge (well worth the upgrade when you consider the side and back views). We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening as the are some great places nearby. We found Caffe Vivo just a 5 minute walk away, highly recommended.
The reason for my average review is the tiredness of the hotel, which is in need of refurbishment after 10-15 years, however we found all staff to be friendly and welcoming and room service was easily contacted. Breakfast in the room was a delight, delivered in a hamper and leaving us full for the day, freshly squeezed orange juice and yoghurt with compote and granola were the highlights, but the croissants were also excellent and nicely warmed.
We would most certainly stay again

i worked in newcastle from time to time and when I do i stay here. It is tried and tested and is always consistent. The staff are very good the rooms always clean and well appointed and the food is good. It is on the quayside and the aspect is good.

the decoration is unusual and perhaps not what i would normally choose but it is a small consideration.

Over all very good and reasonably priced

Mal Newcastle is the 4th mal we have visited and it never disappoints. We had a river view which had amazing views right opposite the millennium bridge. For location it is fantastic. We had drinks in the bar over looking the Tyne which was lovely. Looking forward to our next malmasion trip.

Room Tip: River view is well worth the upgrade

The decor is a tad dark however the staff were brilliant and the room well appointed. Smart tv and free wifi, comfy bed nice bathroom but no moisturiser. We received a couple of cocktail vouchers as it was our wedding anniversary.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the millennium bridge and the pitcher and piano is just over the road

An excellent stay at a lovely hotel situated on the banks of the Tyne right opposite the Millennium Bridge. From the friendly staff to the spacious room to the excellent food, all 1st class. Had an evening meal in the restaurant, again really enjoyable. A lovely walk along the river side to the Metro Arena (approx 15-20 mins) and only 10-15mins walk to the heart of the city (a womans paradise for shopping). This was a lovely stay at at a lovely hotel in a lovely city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river

Had dinner at a local restaurant on the Quayside and popped into the Mal for some drinks in their bar with friends. Some of the décor is shabby and well past it's best but the staff were really welcoming and friendly. One young man needs special mention. Lewis, one of the bar staff was really helpful when one of his colleagues seems to have disappeared. When I went to the bar to order more drinks and sort the bill out he could not have been more helpful, polite and well groomed, he listened to what was being asked and acted on it. What the place needs is more staff as conscientious as him and they might be on a winner. However, the place still needs a good makeover! .

A comfortable stay. The decor was not particularly to our taste and the room slightly on the small side, hence the 'Very Good' rather than the 'Excellent'.

The breakfast was of good quality and the staff helpful. The Geordie accent is lovely to listen to and makes everyone seem very pleasant!

The hotel's location was convenient with pleasant walking nearby.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
