“Smelly Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

The hotel was very grubby and smelly, plug ins in all corridors and such a bad smell of dampness. Hotel staff lovely but hopefully they get the smell sorted as was really unimpressed. Didn't want to eat in hotel as smell was so overwhelming.

“An honest review”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Having spent a good 10-15mins trying to find the hotel we eventually realised this was under full scaffolding and on a double yellow line & therefore could not stop. We found a space further in the town in which to call the hotel & were advised by a friendly receptionist to just park up on the pavement beside the scaffolding & come in for a pass to allow us to park across the street. Not only was this dangerous but totally illegal & could have resulted in a ticket. Luckily for us I was able to go leaving my husband in the car in case the police arrived. Then did I find the reception was on the first floor so was away from the car 10 mins. Not great if you are a lone driver. There was a smell of damp but not too bad and as the receptionist was so friendly said nothing. When we arrived in the room we were so disappointed. It was so dull & dingy it reminded me of a prison cell. A damp patch on the ceiling with paper starting to come off, very chipped paint on the skirtings & so stuffy. The original windows were stuck shut & if you opened the secondary glazing fitten you could then not use the wardrobe or bedside table as they hit off both as there was no room so make your choice! The room felt so hot we used an app on the phone to record it... 85 degrees! We found a rickety old cooler fan which we turned on & left on 3pm until we left the hotel the following morning about 10 & still the room was too hot. All it was doing was circulating stale air. On a positive note the bed linen seemed clean as did the bathroom but as it was so small with a half sized bath which was a joke. The TV also worked but the room furniture was dreadful & looked like something left over from an office flitting. With the toilet being so near the wall & loo roll holder just above I kept knocking it off when trying to use the loo & at one point the whole roll fell into the loo. I decised to leavce it sitting on the ledge & nearly took my shoulder out when I sat on the loo the next time as the holder jabbed right into me. There was no one at reception again until we left so couldn't raise any issues. The breakfast was ok but served on chipped crockery. The best of all was the fact that you had to keep the curtains shut most of the time during working hours as there was a stream of work men walking past the window constantly. In a room af this temp not good at all. feel we are being conned as these rooms are being sold as good deals. This is not the case at all. If you get a good quality room at a reduced price due to late booking this is a deal, not a substandard room at supposed reduced cost. I think the room was worth no more that about £25 & that was only because thw TV worked & the bed & bath were clean. This is probably the worst hoteal I have stayed in & will never return. Luckily we were moving on the next day. I do feel that Late deals should check & monitor hotels registered with them for quality & cost as this was very misleading. I plan to contact them. I would say STAY AWAY not worth £49.95 a big con!!! Sorry for the long review but forewarned is forearmed.

“Don't Judge a Book by it's cover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We struggled to find the Hotel as there was scaffolding on the front, so I phoned the hotel for help, Heidi the receptionist was very friendly and talked me to the car park whilst my husband drove.
On entering the Hotel I was disappointed by the smell of damp. At reception again Heidi was very helpful. On entering the bedroom we found everything immaculately clean, the bedlinen, towels and bathroom. Location is excellent for both the quayside where there are lots of restaurants and also for the city centre, although the walk is uphill to the city. The dining room was quite small but again the waitress was very quick and efficient. The breakfast was very big, possibly a little overfaced, maybe it needs a bigger plate. Value for money, excellent

Room Tip: We booked via late rooms and had the option to pay £1extra for an executive room, I don't know...

“Out the way of the busy streets.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012 via mobile

There are a few pubs /clubs around the hotel but not enough to worry about. The staff where all polite, helpfull and cheerfull. Room was really clean, good size bathroom, nice decor, tv and stuff for brews. Full English breakfast gives plenty of choices for anyone. My windows could have done with a clean because I had a good view of the Tyne.

“Good and bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Our stay at this hotel was such a mixed experience it is tricky to rate accurately. The first floors have clearly been redecorated since their flood but the smell of damp and drains remains and there is no lift up to the first floor. The receptionist is lovely and very helpful, nothing too much trouble, our first room was small and dark, we were moved upon request but warned about noise at the front of the hotel. The rooms are tired and in need of refurb. Little touches missing like a full length mirror, hooks behind the doors especially in the bathroom. The lightingwas inadequate for getting ready in the evening. The main shock was that the room was not serviced for the 3 nights we were there, the bed was 'straightened' and clean towels put on the bed ( which we didnt need) but no fresh loo roll, tea and coffee etc was not topped up and the bathroom was not cleaned the whole time we were there, even after telling the receptionist. The housekeeping really lets the hotel down, mould and grime around the shower screen all of which could be removed. The cups had tide marks round them where they were just swilled out and not replaced with clean. We loved the views from our room over the bridges and had no noise problem once the windows were closed even on a Friday. The breakfast was very good and freshly cooked, waitress served with a good choice. For what we paid for the room it was good value and we would stay again, but the cleaners need to take more pride in their work and not lazily cut corners!
