“Good value for money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2012

My wife and I brought our son to Newcastle for a university interview and needed an overnight stay. Choose this hotel as it had reasonable reviews and their `offers` were good. Also another couple doing the same thing had posted a good review. Very friendly staff who went out of their way to accommodate us (we didn`t leave our room until gone 2 the next day). The restaurant wasn`t open on a Tuesday, but we were guided to one across the road, The Cherry Tree, which whilst a little pricey for the fare was good.

We had rooms on the second floor and although smallish were clean and tidy. Beds comfortable although I always take my own pillow!

You get a parking pass for the street outside and the neighbourhood seemed safe and we had no problems. There`s a Waitrose about two minutes walk away if you need anything.

The owner is trying hard to make a success of this hotel and we wish him well.

This review is solely of the restaurant. I have never stayed at the Jesmond Hotel but have eaten there on many occasions.

The restaurant, previously known as Amers but recently refurbished and renamed the Jesmond Brasserie, used to be excellent. It was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand when Paul Amers was the Chef. Unfortunately, he has since moved on.

Although the new chef is a decent cook, the food is not of the standard or variety it once was.

I suspect they are trying to run the brasserie on a tight budget while trying to maintain it’s previous reputation. This isn’t working out terribly well. There only ever seems to be one guy working in the kitchen and, if he is the sole chef, I expect there is a limit to what he can achieve.

Some of the food is great. The Chef does wonders with cheaper cuts, for example, shoulder of beef or belly pork. However, much of the menu seems to be presented in exactly the same way; that is on a plate of mash (albeit very nice mash) swimming in gravy with the odd green bean or mange tout thrown in. One of our party had the “traditional” Christmas dinner in December and was astounded that even the turkey arrived on top of a plate of mash and gravy. This wasn’t what I would call a traditional Christmas dinner.

The menu has also become very “samey”. Sirloin steak with chips and fish and chips are always available. These aren’t served with mash and gravy by the way, and the twice cooked chips are very nice indeed.

The repetitive menu is a shame, as I’m sure the Chef could achieve more. There is just this pervading feeling that money is tight and the place is being run on a shoestring. I appreciate times are probably very hard in the hospitality industry but I really hope the Brasserie can find a way to manage costs and offer a good and more varied menu. I’m confident it would be in it’s long term interests to do so.

Jesmond Brasserie welcomes all comments and appreciates yours.
The concept of Amers was fine dining as opposed to the casual dining of Jesmond Brasserie and so the style of food is bound to be different. Our concepts are wholly separate and we hope you understand that we are not trying to be Amers but Jesmond Brasserie.
We do not deny that our budget is less than it was when we were Amers however we are not being run on a shoestring. Our budget is set by the head chef who buys the food according to his wishes. With the change in concept comes an equal change in budget and food, we feel our food reflects our concept. Furthermore the Amers menu was often populated by the so called cheaper cuts such as pork belly and mackerel which can create a better dish than the more expensive cuts.
Our menu is a combination of the cheaper (belly pork, mackerel etc.) and more expensive (French black pudding, scallops, smoked salmon, venison etc.) products. Our customers are more than happy with the food choice and prices, which reflect our product use. We are customer conscious and our customers tells us what a delight it is to have an affordable meal which tastes wonderful. We would like to thank you for your compliments to our head chef and next time you visit we invite you to try the shoulder of beef which our chef truly does work wonders with.
We are sorry that you feel the chef was often unaccompanied however on the day you dined it was unfortunate that it was our head chef’s day off.
This Christmas time our staff decided that Christmas dinner should be served with creamy mash as oppose to roasted potatoes. Please let us know next time if you have any requests, we are more than happy accommodate our customer’s preferences.
We have a strong regular client base with whom fish and chips and sirloin steak is a firm favourite. By taking classic dishes of the menu we would be upsetting our regular customers.
Our current menu contains only one dish served with mash however in winter people do wants warming dishes of which mash potato is a great part of. We always offer seasonal dishes at the moment the dishes are such as: Pan seared guinea fowl served on green vegetable and wild mushroom risotto, Sea bream served on a cassoulet of white beans and chorizo with café au lait foam.
Jesmond Brasserie has been open almost a year and we hear nothing but praises about the food and service. Jesmond Brasserie has recently been reviewed in Accent magazine of which the title was “Simplicity key to success”.
We welcome all comments from customers and would encourage you to come visit again and give us feedback.

Stayed at the hotel over the weekend for one night.

PROS
- The area the hotel is in is really nice and feels safe
- The hotel itself is inviting, the reception is very nicely decorated
- The price is good for the area
- The room was clean and well presented
- Free wifi (although did not use this personally)

CONS
- By far my biggest complaint is that the room was absolutely freezing and the radiator did not turn on. They would not give us another room. I had to put on all of my clothing (coat included!) before I could sleep. Very uncomfortable and woke up exhausted.
- Walk to train station into Newcastle centre is about 10-15 minutes, so only suitable for those who are physically fit
- We were put on top floor only to find there is no lifts, had to walk up about 4-5 sets of steps (I'm only in my twenties and very healthy, but I struggled & found it very tiring!)
- Whilst the main lights in the room worked, the ones next to our beds didn't. To see, we had to go in the dark to the other side of the room for the main light switch and fumble around for it which was impossible as we weren't used to the layout.
- The plugs are away from the mirror, so if you want to style hair etc it's impossible
- Shower very weak making it impossible to wash hair properly. No bath.
- The staff were a bit distant. When entering the hotel ready for bed, the staff member did not greet us but demanded to know my hotel number as if I were trying to sneak in which was hardly a great first impression

Room Tip: If you are unfit request a bottom floor

Location is ok but very small room. The toilet was dirty in the room we stayed. No one bothered to clean the room and no replacement of milk, tea and shampoo on the 2nd day of our stay. The receptionist were full of attitude and rude to us. We'll not stay at this hotel again!

I use this hotel restaurant regularly ,last time for a family party of 14 ,and we have always been well looked after and served excellent food. We are going back again next month after carols at Jesmond Parish Church and looking forward to another good meal at a reasonable price in nice surroundings. ( the temporary parking voucher js another bonus )

Stayed here for one night as we were watching Arctic Monkeys at the Metro Arena.
Our first impressions were excellent, clean and well presented reception area and friendly staff.
Our room number 23 was at the front of the building, it was well presented and larger than expected. A little tired but comfortable.
My only problem with the room was that there were NO curtains. This was not a problem until the sun came up and light streamed through the blinds at 6.30 am. Had to place t shirt over my head until i thought it was time i got up.
Like i said this was my only issue with the hotel and room.

I recently stayed for one night at this hotel as I was visiting friends in the locality. First impressions are imperative for any stay and people often forget that the first experience you have of a place is the telepone manner of the receptionist - many places I have phoned are too busy to speak to you or just plain rude - however the telephone manner of the girl at this hotel was polite and very friendly

The rooms were cosy and warm with lost of space. The beds were very comfortable and I enjoyed a lovely nights sleep.

The restaurant / brasserie was advertised as "unpretencious" and this was certainly the case. The food was excellent and you got a good hearty plate! The service was excellent and friendly. There was a wide range of food and wine - but not too much as to be overbearing - some restaurants have page upon page of choices which can be rather annoying.

A definate keeper for next time I am in the area.
