“Lovely views, nicely positioned”

Copthorne Newcastle

Jul 28, 2007

Stayed on a Sunday night with a family group.
The check in was smooth and our room was ready at 1400, even though, as it was a Sunday normal check in is stated 1600.
First impression, room had a lovely view, via a bay window, fairly large a bed and a seating area in the window.
The decor and room could be described as comfortable and adequate. Tea/coffee making facilities, bit mean in the biscuit dept' with one v small one each. one hot chocolate between two but I am sure if I had rang house keeping we would have received more!
The bathroom was a bit of a let down, I would say past its sell buy date. grouting around bath a bit grey and the bath a bit old and knackered (local speake)
We ate out in stowle street (china town) at king neptune, excellent. Breakfast was lovely and the service excellent, we were all able to sit together and served together(which sometimes is a rarity if your group is over 6)
My brother used the pool and said it was good and very quiet. There is a spa and I glanced at the treatments, which were quite extensive and cheap.
The benefits of this hotel make up for the some of the room let downs.
Easy parking with nothing to pay, a nice stroll about 20-30 mins into main shopping area, grey street and eldon square. a v short taxi ride to stowell street for dinner. There is a chinese restaurant straight over the road but I dont know what its like to eat in (if you dont fancy trailing around)
Lovely view, if river facing and a seating area on the river front, for a nice pint, if its not raining....

“Excellent Hotel”

Copthorne Newcastle

Jul 23, 2007

After reading reviews of this hotel we were a bit unsure about our stay at the Copthorne. But right from check in our stay could not have been more pleasureable.

The room was larger than the normal hotel room, with a lovely view over the Tyne. It was very clean and not at all tired. The bathroom was clean and not as other reviews had discribed.

It was well positioned for all the restaurant's and bar's & only a short walk from the main central station and shopping area.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Newcastle.

“Disgusting room”

Arrived with great expectations. Armchair in the room had the stuffing coming out of it and tghere was a broken desk chair and the bathroom had fungus climbing all the way to the ceiling. The towel rail was covered in rust.
There was rubbish under the bed. There are apparently seven classes of rooms and I was obviously allocated the worst
The lounge bar chairs were no better with the settee seating support having collapsed. One I would recommend to miss. Also there is no business broadband in the rooms only dial up.

“ok, but in need of renovation”

Copthorne Newcastle

Jul 3, 2007

Stayed there couple of nights, like other reviews. I will say this hotel definately need a bit of renovation. Furniture, carpets and wall paper are tired. Tiles in bathroom are moudly and need re-grouding.

Otherwise rooms are spacious with floor to ceiling windows with great view on the river. But here again, there is bird poo on the windows and they need to be clean ! There is an empty fridge, ideal for your own stuff but no minibar. Very poor selection of TV channels.

The spa / gym complex is well tired too (missing tiles and lockers doors are broken or missing ).
There is a nice size pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi (not working).

We went downstairs for breakfast, nice restaurant overlooking the river. Service is ok !
Breakfast is alright, nothing particular about it. I mean there is an extensive choice buffet. But the pastries are definately frozen and they do not taste nice. I drink hot chocolate and it is the first time ever in 4 stars hotel, I have hot chocolate made with water. Eww taste horrible !

Otherwise location wise is great, a short walk distance from down town and to rail station.

I will return, but hey do not pay the full asking rate ! Not worth it at all !!!

“OK but a bit tired”

Copthorne Newcastle

Jun 13, 2007

I have stayed here twice in three weeks, on both occasions for work and the hotel was booked for me. It was adequate but really needs to be refreshed. The first room I stayed in could have done with proper refurbishment and cleaning. The windows and balcony had been well covered by the seagulls and I would have thought a clean would not have gone amiss. The second room was better appearing to be in a more modern part of the hotel. The sound of the metro nearby which starts at 5.20am can be disturbing if you try to sleep beyond this time. Staff fine and helpful and the breakfast was very good, though I would not have been so sure about value for money if I was paying.
