“Good short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

We arrived before check in time,no problem got our room right away.Nice room basic but all you need for an overnight stay.
Staff very helpful, was recommended a nice restaurant.
Breakfast was sufficient for our needs.
If I was being picky, the soap dispensers in the toilet and shower room were very reluctant to give you any soap.
All in all a nice stay.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay. Your comments regarding the soap dispensers are very valuable. We have just changed our dispensers to a more customer friendly pump design to try and cut down on any issues in this area. Once again many thanks for your comments.

Reading some of the reviews before booking I did wonder if this was the right hotel to choose, however I need not have worried. Although the first impression was not good, we arrived late on Monday afternoon to an empty car park strewn with KFC boxes from the outlet across the road, also all the bins surrounding the hotel were overflowing. The reception staff were ery good and we were soon in our room, I did notice something which confirmed the reviews about rowdy behaviour, all the fire extinguishers were fitted with alarms, something you don't see every day.
The room was on the ground floor and faced the roundabout at the top of the rise behind the hotel, even when busy the sound was not bad at all and we had a very quite stay. The room was clean and well maintained, could not fault it, the breakfast room was large and the actual breakfast bar area a good size, the food was fine, the usual HIE breakfast offerings.
One question though, what was the orange liquid that came out of the machine marked orange juice?
As mentioned in an earlier review the hotel has several restaurants around it and the Angel pub a short walk towards the Metro Centre. Someone previously mentioned that you could walk to the Metro Centre, yes you can but I would not recommend it if you intend to buy anything as it is quite a walk, better take your car.
As we stayed from Monday to Thursday I guessed we avoided any groups of young people so we had a quite stay in the hotel. The hotel is ideally located if you want to visit any of the sites along Hadrians Wall, as we did and shop at the Metro Centre again as we did, we will certainly stay there again.
By the way when we left, the bins were still overflowing, does no one empty them?

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, your comments regarding the bins have been taken on board and I would like to assure you that we do empty our bins twice a day. However as you have mentioned given the close proximity of several large chain restaurants it is very rarely hotel/guest rubbish we are dealing with. To combat this we have added extra bin disposal rounds. Many thanks for your fair and unbiased assessment of the hotel.

The holiday inn express at the Metro Centre in Gateshead, UK provided the worst nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel.

I have stopped at Holiday inn expresses and several other IHG brands (as well as many others) and never experienced any issues.

We had booked this room as a romantic treat for our anniversary. What a mistake.

The problem was with the noise in the Hotel. A large amount of all male / female group bookings had been taking (for hen and stag do's). This generated lots of door slamming and shouting at all hours of the night. Particularly a large group of males accomadated right beside us.

After trying to get to sleep from around 11pm we complained to the management at 1am after having no sleep we asked to move rooms. We where advised to go back to our same room and security will take a look. Security came up and talked to some people but the noise level did not drop.

At 2am we contacted reception as the noise level was even higher. Again our room was not changed and security came up and asked the room next to us to be quiet but this had absolutely no effect.

At 3am we had enough and packed our bags to leave. We went down to reception and only at this point we where offered an alternative room in another part of the building. Why this could not be done earlier i do not know. In reception several drunk guests where arguing with security. We where giving a new room.

After walking to the 5th floor (the lift was broken) we settled down to hear loud noises from other rooms nearby, we had told a cheerleading convention was in town and it sounded like they where practicing.

We decided against asking to move rooms again as it was getting very late and to try to sleep.

Eventually after 5.30 am we managed to get to sleep (although this was disturbed every so often by what sounded like a faulty manhole cover being ran over by a car).

Around 9am everyone started going to breakfast so we where woken up after getting less than 4 hours of disturbed sleep.

We then went to breakfast but all the tables where full with all the large groups so we could not get in for breakfast.

We checked out, the receptionist did not even bother to ask if we enjoyed our stay (I bet she could tell).

May I suggest in the future that a warning is placed on the website of this hotel about large male/female parties like some other brands. I understand Newcastle is getting a party town image (thanks to the TV program geordie shore). However I do not expect this sought of behavior in an out of town hotel by such a reputable brand. Families where also staying in the hotel and I dread to think what they though of this.

Looking on tripadvisor (which with hindsight i should have done before this stay) several people have made similar comments so this not a one off.

In the future I will be staying at other brands hotels (in particular ones which offer a good nights sleep are your money

4 of us stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend mainly for going out around newcastle and exploring the city. On arrival the receptionist helped us get our room keys and was fairly helpful in explaining where our rooms were. We were happy with our room, had everything you would need, nothing luxurious but very clean. The other 2 people in our party however, were not impressed. They said their room smelt of smoke which it did and the receptionist wasn't all that helpful in resolving this, anyway the girls decided with some air freshener they were given that they would stick it out. We had no problems throughout our stay- the hotel is definitely popular with young people like ourself just looking for somewhere to stay on a saturday night- it can get quite noisy and we were kept up for a little bit by noisy people. Breakfast was nice plenty of choice, although on monday morning the times it closed were earlier so we missed it which was a bit of a shame. Overall nice hotel for the money- do not stay here if luxury or a good nights sleep is what your looking for.

We stayed here on a Saturday night. I should have known what sort of night we were going to have when I heard the noise coming from the rooms either side of us as soon as we reached our room. We were stuck right in the middle of a large group of lads who seemed to occupy a lot of the rooms on the floor. We were going out that night and returning late so we just thought that the noise would have stopped by the time we got in at 3am. We were very wrong. When we returned to our room there was a large group of drunk men and young girls hanging around in the corridors being very loud. I tried to call reception, but the phone in our room didn't work properly and I couldn't be bothered to have to pass them again to go downstairs and speak to security in person. The noise went on for most of the night and I had very little sleep. There should have been security checking the floors during the night to prevent this from happening. At about 8am on the Sunday morning there were people knocking loudly on each other’s doors around us and shouting to each other in the corridors about their plans for the day. No consideration for other guests who may have wanted a lay in whatsoever. There was very little food left at 9.30am when we went for breakfast. I could see why when I noticed people piling their plates high with about 10 slices of bread each and stuffing yogurts and other items into their pockets. There were people laying around as if they were at home and dumping their empty glasses onto our table as they walked by when we were trying to eat. Very civilised! Needless to say I won't be returning. I know the clientele isn't down to the hotel, but guests should be given rooms away from large groups and security should be patrolling the halls at night to ensure other guests aren't being disturbed.

We stayed in a family room over the Easter Weekend 2013 and really enjoyed the break. Close to the retail outlet (Metro Centre) and various Eating places, including TGI's, KFC & a lovely family pub for lunch or an evening meal.
The restaurant for breakfast was very well organised and very clean. They cater for early risers & those who like to sleep in a little later. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the rooms exceptionally clean & comfortable.
We overlooked a railway line and a main road, but heard no noise at all.
Very good links to Newcastle City Centre by Car, Bus or the Metro- only 10mins away.
Lovely friendly people and 5 star service!

The hotel was well maintained. We were surprised at how quiet the room as given that we looked across a main raod - we hardly heard any noise. It is well positioned for the Metro Centre. There were full tea and coffeee facilities and the staff were most helpful. The breakfast was self-service with a limited choice of hot food. What was available was good
