“little bit of India in Newcastle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

We went to the Rupali on a Thursday evening 16th January and had a very enjoyable 2 course meal. The staff were helpful and polite the food was excellent and beautifully cooked and hot.We were told by staff that they had a shortage on one of our choices but suggested an alternative meal which more than met our expectations.Isobel

“Timeless and How a Curry House Should be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

After a long absence, I was back and good to see the Lord Harpole has not changed a thing. Yes its upstairs off the Bigg market, they open at lunchtimes on Saturdays when Newcastle are playing at home, yes it features in Viz and it did at one time hold the Guiness World record for the hottest curry.
They don't colour the Tikka either which is good. Chicken Tikka Madras, stunning, thick rich gravy, the way it used to be, Chapati, saag bhaji. If you want fancy modern Asian cuisine where they try to modernise a curry and nearly always fail, go elsewhere, if you have a fussy girlfriend/boyfriend, go elsewhere. If you want a cracking curry with minimum of fuss go to the Rupali, you wont be disappointed.

“Poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

Went on Friday night, hardly anyone in (not surprising)'was cold and no atmosphere, staff could not careless, food was ok but nothing to be excited about,on finishing our meal the staff took our plates but left the tables with spilt food on,not bothering to wipe, please take that picture down of the boy looking very sad or crying, people don't want to be staring at that when there supposed to b enjoying themselves, and lastly put Indian music on,not modern music!!this place is not a patch on what it used to b like!!!AVOID

“Disappointing atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

I was really disappointed on entering the restaurant to find the decor was bland (even a few mops and cleaning products in view) and there was very poor use of space. The food was lovely, some of the best Indian food I've ever had but we felt no desire to stay after we finished eating as the restaurant had absolutely no atmosphere. We went using a 25% off food deal which the waiter initially said was not valid. After querying it, they did allow it but it was still a bit annoying. Whilst the food is nice, I wouldn't recommend it for an evening out.

“Distinctly Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013

Indian restaurants are ten a penny and you have to do something these days to stand out and make the customer want to return. The Rupali does neither. Not open at all on a Sunday, despite what it says outside on the door and closes well before the advertised closing time, maybe when the staff just feel like it.
Unsociable indifferent staff serve with no pleasure, it's obviously just a job to them. The place was almost empty and prices are fairly steep. The best part was the king prawn rogan josh with four very large king prawns in it but apart from that I'm struggling to think of anything else positive.
Then once outside, it's like a war zone on the Bigg Market.
Nothing makes me want to rush back and I have been very kind in an average review as it really deserves poor.
