“Lovely spacious bedrooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012 via mobile

Stayed for one night on a special Sunday deal. Superior room was spacious and comfy with nice furnishings. Monsoon shower was nice and powerful. Cocktails were excellent but the food in the bistro was a little disappointing. Meals average for the high price tag. Overall nice for a special treat.

I had a single night here recently and was hugely impressed by the rooms. Wonderful comfy beds with tasteful furnishings. The room we had was also very spacious with air conditioning.
The bar area is very nice with a great selection of wines and beers to choose from.

My only gripe was the price.....not of the rooms but the breakfasts. £14.95 is a fair amount of money to pay for an english breakfast, especially when they are not exactly on the large size and their standard breakfast is around £12.95 which is a lot for orange juice, tea with a selection of muesli cereals and pastries.

Despite the minor gripe over pricing (heck, if you don't want it then dont order it) I would certainly recommend the rooms and the staff where all very friendly.

Room Tip: Mention if it's a birthday or special occasion as I think they will offer an upgrade

Beautiful hotel, good service, friendly, great location. First visit to Newcastle and it couldn't have gone better thanks largely to the choice of hotel which is positioned far enough from the city centre to provide a quiet night's sleep but close enough to explore the Quayside and shopping. Was sad to leave and cannot wait to return

I had a chance to stay here for one night for work. I found the hotel cozy and warm while the rooms spacious, modern, and well-appointed. I had a great night's sleep here and would go back if I am up in Newcastle again. I also dined at the bistro...loved the food, service.

Generally ok, but it did feel like they were trying to squeeze more and more money out of you. For example, there was a botle of red wine in the room, with an price tag (£16.95) in huge text. Not quite sure what they were trying to achieve but it just rubbed it in. They also try to charge you £10 for parking beside the street outside.

The service at breakfast was appalling; for example, one of the party had to wait 20 minutes for his kippers, another order was totally forgotten and I was never even asked. Reception only superficially interested when i complained and laughed it off.

Glad I wasn't paying for it myself.

OK, so Hotel Du Vin are a chain, but they're a pretty good chain - in as much as they don't actually feel too much like a cookie-cutter hotel.
I definitely wanted somewhere very nice for this particular trip, and didn't want any element of a gamble, so having stayed and eaten at HDV a few times before, it seemed a good choice - backed up by a very cool looking building for the Newcastle hotel and a perfect location for The Sage (the other part of the evening's plan) - a 10 minute walk along the river and across the Millenium Bridge.

So, here goes:
The room - extremely good. I booked an open plan suite, and got Mouton-Rothschild (the room that has the massive, arched window in the middle of the hotel). A very, very nice room - big (but not massive), comfortable, stylish and extremely well appointed. The mezzanine bathroom was very cool and the drench shower was fabulous. And, of course, great views across The Tyne. Amusing too, to be attempting to check in early and be told 'sorry, your room's not ready. And it's going to take at least an hour to clean that room...'. A winner before we've even started.
The general decor - great. The hotel is an old reclaimed industrial building and has that feel to it - definitely not a cold, lifeless faux-old new-build. As per most HDVs it's all bare wood and brick, brown leather and chunky woody stuff kicking around. So very warm, very welcoming and very nice.
The service - excellent. Friendly, but not overly intrusive, and just engaged enough to make me feel like they actually bothered that I was choosing to stay at this particular hotel. Basically perfect.
The restaurant - predictably good. I like the HDV Bistro - nothing too flash or crazy, just really, really good food, a pleasantly relaxed (but slightly high-end) atmosphere and good service. And anywhere where I hear the words 'I'll leave your fork, you might need it to break through the cheese' when describing soup is my kind of place.
The bar - good, but not great. The actual bar itself was good, with excellent drinks and good service, but there isn't much space in the bar itself - you kind of end up on one of the sofas where the bar spills into the reception area which is ok, but a little cold and not quite in keeping with the comfy leather sofas, open fires and general vibe of the place.

Overall then, basically spot on. Great room, great service and the good food and drinks you would expect. Not particularly cheap (if you choose one of the posh rooms), but not crazy expensive and definitely an extremely pleasant experience so, in value terms, pretty good.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again - or recommend it to anyone. I liked Hotel Du Vin before, and this stay has only helped.

First impressions excellent ,walk into a lovely courtyard through to a small reception area with a well stocked bar + lounge nearby . Picked up the key for the room ,bit difficult to find , Opened the door huge room , big bed very comfortable , large telly , huge walk in shower ,boss music system couple of lounges . A spiral staircase to the next level , this brought me to 2 large cast iron baths , another telly 2 more lounge chairs , Great lighting system ,very romantic . Extremely impressed with the room . The Bistro was tasteful the food was ok , although my girlfriend asked for her steak well done + it had to be sent back . It was expensive , the advertised price was very confusing £150.00 for the room , providing you spent at least £ 75.00 in the bar + or bistro ( which wasnt difficult ) . The car park is an extra £ 10 which i thought extortionate considering the money spent in their hotel . It should have been free , the staff were very friendly . Plenty of towels in the room + dressing gowns . The room was very warm + the heating was not easy to alter . All in all the room was amazing + i would quite happily stay there again , the hotel is near to the Tyne bar which has live music on + i would recommend it .

Room Tip: ask for the romantic room , dont ask me to pronounce it though lol its all in French .
