I feel guilty ! I never posted a positive review when I felt that Vivo was one of the best places to go in town, now I am motivated to write when we had a somewhat mediocre experience certainly for a restauarant in the Laybourne dynasty. Sorry Vivo !
We would go maybe once or twice a year and enjoyed the food, the service and the buzz around the place. We turned up last year and it seemed to have lost its edge, but put it down to a one off. Having gone back last weekend, I do think there are certain things that they need to attend to.
The positives. We love the "planks" that the starters come on following some lovely bread and olive oil. A fun way to share some nibbles whilst taking in some reasonably priced wine. My main course of venison was rich and delicious and actually the price overall at just under £70 for the two of us was not too bad in terms of where we expected it to be.
The negatives. The place still has a buzz, which is great, but sometimes it has almost out of control feeling. The service was patchy and chaotic, as we were attended to by 5 different people - not a problem as such, but the range of service was so variable, with some excellence from some quarters, to one or two staff who appeared didn't want to be there. My wifes lasagne was not as hot as it should be and the shared plum pudding for dessert was lukewarm and unfortunately sent back.
On balance it was still a nice night and some of the food was lovely. It's just not as good as it used to be and maybe not as good as it ought to be. Will probably give it a miss for a while now.
