“Not as good as it used to be.............”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

I feel guilty ! I never posted a positive review when I felt that Vivo was one of the best places to go in town, now I am motivated to write when we had a somewhat mediocre experience certainly for a restauarant in the Laybourne dynasty. Sorry Vivo !

We would go maybe once or twice a year and enjoyed the food, the service and the buzz around the place. We turned up last year and it seemed to have lost its edge, but put it down to a one off. Having gone back last weekend, I do think there are certain things that they need to attend to.

The positives. We love the "planks" that the starters come on following some lovely bread and olive oil. A fun way to share some nibbles whilst taking in some reasonably priced wine. My main course of venison was rich and delicious and actually the price overall at just under £70 for the two of us was not too bad in terms of where we expected it to be.

The negatives. The place still has a buzz, which is great, but sometimes it has almost out of control feeling. The service was patchy and chaotic, as we were attended to by 5 different people - not a problem as such, but the range of service was so variable, with some excellence from some quarters, to one or two staff who appeared didn't want to be there. My wifes lasagne was not as hot as it should be and the shared plum pudding for dessert was lukewarm and unfortunately sent back.

On balance it was still a nice night and some of the food was lovely. It's just not as good as it used to be and maybe not as good as it ought to be. Will probably give it a miss for a while now.

“Enjoyable visit and lovely food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

Had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Food was good quality, I had the venison & mash, even though there wasn't mush venison in the taste was excellent, my better half had the lasagne and is very fussy, but she said it was 'tasty'. for afters I had the cheeseboard with extra chilli oil, mmmmm. She had the chocolate mousse thing! which didnt last long. The service was quick and polite. We will return.

“OVERRATED”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Food wasn't very exciting for Terry Laybourne restaurant. Not up to previous standard, portion size reduced while prices increase - really is this right. Is the Cafe 21 chain now run by an accountant or is the owner to greedy??

“Lovely meal with good service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

7 of us ate there and had a wonderful meal with great wine and service.

The only criticism was for the 7 of us the table was far too small, and we therefore felt cramped and slightly uncomfortable.

We would all go back but would want a roomier table.

Also service is added to your bill at 10% and I enquired with the waiter and he he confirmed that the staff received the charge in full. Therefore no tip required!

Great restaurant on the Quayside with great pub, Braid Chare, right next door.

“Nothing special at all. Actually, food pretty duff.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

Work Christmas dinner, table for 9 so no great issue for kitchen as pre-ordered from set menu. Food arrived promptly; my starter a misto fritte (mixed fried fish) over cooked to oblivion, served without lemon or tarte sauce so as dry as a (I won't say) . Main, a fried sea bream (whole on the bone) was ok. Colleagues mushroom risotto better. Cheese selection just about the pick of the dishes presented. Accepting it was a Xmas meal for 9, there was still zero about the overall experience to tempt me back.
