The Asperion is a contemporary styled hotel with a strong eco-friendly focus. We stayed in the Cathedral Suite for 2 nights in June 09 with our 2 year old, at a rate of £120/night inc breakfast. The hotel has one cot available, and no high chairs; we did not see any other children whilst staying, so we expect they cater predominately for the business user. Indeed, the hotel was very busy both nights with business travellers.
Having stayed at various hotels in and around Guildford, this one hits a higher mark in many areas. Primarily, its location is excellent, a short walk down the hill from the hotel brings you to the main rail station, then the bus station, and city centre. The University of Surrey or the Hospital is a 10 to 30 minute walk (depending on which area of the campus) through the surburban streets to the rear of the hotel.
Other plus points: the professional, hard-working and thoughtful staff (offer of fresh milk on arrival, offer to keep our buggy in the kitchen to save us lugging it up and down the stairs), the speedy check-in, the complimentary in-room fridge with chocolate and water, the bowl of fresh fruit and free internet throughout the hotel. We were pleased to see the chocolate, fruit etc was replenished on our second day. Also we liked the DVD player, clock radio and the numerous intellectual books left in the rooms such as ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ by Al Gore. An Air Conditioning unit was provided in our room, but we felt that in keeping with the hotel's ethos, we'd go for the greener option of throwing open all the windows instead!
Being an eco-friendly hotel, there wasn’t a bath, the shower was a good Aqua Lisa power-shower; and a small amount of toiletries were provided.
As others have said, rooms here are on the small side, anyone expecting a traditional ‘suite’ will be disappointed – it is a medium sized room, with more windows than the double/single rooms, having a bed at one end, and desk, table, chairs at the other.
There are a few areas where we feel the owners could improve on the Asperion experience: a desk lamp, upgrading the TV to the basic digital package (our daughter missed her CBeebies!), and the provision of a wider range of breakfast foodstuffs to include pastries, cheeses, cold meats and a better range of cereals. The cooked breakfast on the second morning was slightly undercooked, perhaps this was a one-off.
£120/night is a lot of money for a hotel room, particularly in the present climate. However, compared to the standard of accommodation on offer in Guildford (notably the Travelodge at £80/night (no breakfast), and the negatively-reviewed Holiday Inn who wanted a staggering £145/night for the same period – and that was a reduced corporate rate!), the Asperion is by far the best option for the standard of service received.
