I stop here regularly and eat here too more often than not. Firstly the rooms are in good condition and the beds as comfy as ever. The problem with this stay was the way they have changed the dining in the restaurant. Normally, I have just gone in, spoke to a staff member and found a table. Now I had to queue up by the external entrance (despite their being a sign by the hotel side entrance saying wait here!!) and wait to be taken to a table. And so we waited and waited. They were short staffed and nobody seemed to interested. I went to find somebody who informed me that the Manager would be with us shortly. After waiting a further 10 mins ( it seemed forever when you are stood by a freezing door) the Manager turned up and, despite seeing that there were 5 parties waiting to be seated, took the first group to a table. I could see 4 empty tables from my position by the door. After 10 mins he came back and took the next group. Again the rest of we're left standing like spare parts. He then came for us and we got to a table where he then spent five mins going through a well rehearsed spiel about who our waiter would be, soup of the day etc. etc. He would have been better off sorting out the waiting customers with tables and letting the waiter do all that. The comments from those waiting were of disbelief and anger with the way we were being messed about. The Manager seemed incapable of deviating from a preset manner of doing things despite the lack of staff and the needs of the customers. The food, when it came wasnt much better. my colleague's veg and chips were cold and my medium rare steak was, at best, med/well done. Obviously mine had spent too long under the heat lamps keeping warm and my colleague's was outside the heat rays. A disaster and if it continues like this I won't be eating there again of an evening.
Next morning the breakfast couldn't have been more different. The ladies who run the breakfast couldn't have been better. Quick, efficient, smiling and full of good humour. The moral of the story is enjoy your breakfast but think of eating elsewhere if you want good service in the evening.
