“Not up to their usual standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013 via mobile

I stop here regularly and eat here too more often than not. Firstly the rooms are in good condition and the beds as comfy as ever. The problem with this stay was the way they have changed the dining in the restaurant. Normally, I have just gone in, spoke to a staff member and found a table. Now I had to queue up by the external entrance (despite their being a sign by the hotel side entrance saying wait here!!) and wait to be taken to a table. And so we waited and waited. They were short staffed and nobody seemed to interested. I went to find somebody who informed me that the Manager would be with us shortly. After waiting a further 10 mins ( it seemed forever when you are stood by a freezing door) the Manager turned up and, despite seeing that there were 5 parties waiting to be seated, took the first group to a table. I could see 4 empty tables from my position by the door. After 10 mins he came back and took the next group. Again the rest of we're left standing like spare parts. He then came for us and we got to a table where he then spent five mins going through a well rehearsed spiel about who our waiter would be, soup of the day etc. etc. He would have been better off sorting out the waiting customers with tables and letting the waiter do all that. The comments from those waiting were of disbelief and anger with the way we were being messed about. The Manager seemed incapable of deviating from a preset manner of doing things despite the lack of staff and the needs of the customers. The food, when it came wasnt much better. my colleague's veg and chips were cold and my medium rare steak was, at best, med/well done. Obviously mine had spent too long under the heat lamps keeping warm and my colleague's was outside the heat rays. A disaster and if it continues like this I won't be eating there again of an evening.

Next morning the breakfast couldn't have been more different. The ladies who run the breakfast couldn't have been better. Quick, efficient, smiling and full of good humour. The moral of the story is enjoy your breakfast but think of eating elsewhere if you want good service in the evening.

The recommended taxi firm arrived promptly but took us the long route to our destination, causing the price to increase. We were told this on our return and the route taken back to the hotel was less and even the price of the taxi just before midnight was alot cheaper. I recommend to anyone to research local taxi firms in Guildford before taking the hotels advice. Its unfair that visitors should have to be put through this.

This hotel welcomed 5 adults and 2 children in a very warm and friendly manner and swiftly allocated every one to their rooms .The family room for one adult and two children was particularly good value and when one adult booked breakfast she was told that the two children could breakfast free {and they could eat as much as they liked} We had along jouney home ahead of us and a lovely gesture from the waitresses was that they packed extra muffins for us to taleaway without charge .Lovely end to a happy occasion.

Room Tip: Ground Floor is best

Room was spacious, clean and very comfortable - best nights sleep I've had in ages. More than basic amenities. Room was at the end of a long corridor but close to an emergency escape so I felt really safe. The staff were very welcoming, polite and helpful. Everything done with good will accompanied by a smile - unexpected really because it was over Christmas. We were well looked after and asked several times (by different members of staff) if there was anything else we required. There seems to be very good sound-proofing as we barely heard our 'neighbours' and we believe the hotel was pretty well occupied. (The car park was pretty full)

Room Tip: Can't really comment on room sizes as we only saw in ours. Heard no complaints while we were the...

Stayed with family, the room was on the ground floor.... size able and clean, the bathroom was very decent too and I suspect recently refurbished. No thrills to the stay, the breakfast was typical but good enough, the staff were largely polite. However I did complain 3 different times about the heating in our room, I was told maintenance would check it out and extra heater would be provided if necessary but non of these happened till we left after a 5 night stay.

Info:
Young couple staying here on New Year’s Eve. Room was in the main block, on the ground floor at the end of a long corridor.

Pros:
- Comfortable bed and pillows. Firm without being ‘wooden’ (looking at you Guildford Radisson!).
- Soft headboard!
- Spacious room with plenty of storage space, plus a couple of chairs.
- Found it very easy to control the room temperature.
- Premier Inn’s amazing ‘wide’ shower curtain, which allows you more upper body room and stops the cold curtain flapping against you.
- Plenty of free parking.
- An easy 10-15 minute walk from the town centre.
- Just down the road from Spectrum leisure centre and the home of Guildford City FC.

Cons:
- We may have been unlucky but the noise from people walking around in the room above was a real pain. Perhaps they were especially ‘stompy’ but the floorboards banging and creaking from 7-10am wasn’t a pleasant addition to the stay!
- Shower controls were faded so it took a while to work out how to achieve the desired temperature.
- Vicious speed bumps.
- Perhaps a little noisy with the window open as the rooms face on to busy roads, but that’s not something they can do much about and it wasn’t a major problem.

Other:
- I’ve noticed that prices at this hotel can vary from being cheaper than the nearby Travelodge to being similar to the new Radisson. Premier Inn beats Travelodge hands down in the budget hotel market, so it’s worth an extra few quid to stay here if those are your options.
- We didn’t have breakfast, which is served in the adjacent Table Table restaurant, so I can’t comment on it. Premier Inn breakfasts are usually pretty good, although I baulk at paying £8 for something you could find for half the price in town. Restaurant menu seemed to be standard microwaved fare. I’ve been in there for a drink before and it was pretty uninspiring. However, it did seem very busy on the evening we arrived at the hotel. I struggle to understand why people choose these places rather than going to an independent pub or restaurant where the food is freshly prepared and they care about their customers. Surely that’s what TripAdvisor is for!

Family Room was large, clean and comfortable, as was the bathroom. Small problem with the tv was sorted quickly. No complaints, would stay again and recommend. We had a room on the side so wasn't noisy, we walked from here to a great leisure centre that's nearby- swimming, ice skating, bowling- and 5 min car trip into town.
