“Not a fragrant experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Went to Seckford for an Xmas lunch. The dining experience did not match the lovely building and surroundings.

The service was efficient and the food was served promptly and quickly to our large party. Although it wasn't fine dining. The pâté came with a frazzled tiny piece of wafer thin (I think it was) bread. The Christmas dinner main course consisted of pre sliced catering style turkey and 2 table tennis ball sized potatoes + a damp precision cut square of soggy stuffing and a small amount of veg. Child menu portions! The Xmas pudding was bland.

Oh, and the worst bit.....

The waitress had chronic BO, yuk.

Dear user Nox-idic
Thank you for your comments after your recent lunch here with us at Seckford Hall Hotel. I am disappointed that you did not enjoy your lunch. The pate served at lunch is served with Melba Toast, a form of thin toasted crisp bread which is very popular throughout the year at Seckford Hall. I assure you that all turkey served here is not pre sliced industrial style turkey. We take the full turkey breast off the bone, roast the turkey then slice it; we have even had to erect a temporary satellite kitchen in order for us to be able to cook the volume of turkey needed during this time of year. This is a lengthy process considering the amount of turkey that we serve during the month of December. It is unusual to learn that you found the portions too small - we would have happily served additional vegetables as requested. The Christmas Pudding is again made here at Seckford which I am sorry that you found it to be bland.
Thank you for your comments about a member of the team; this has been addressed in light of your comments
I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Seckford in the new year - please contact me personally for future reservations.
With very best wishes for the festive period
Mark

Visited Seckford last week for our usual family Christmas lunch, lovely atmosphere but the lunch was pretty dire. No wine order was taken from us - we had to remind waitress twice, no bread rolls- had to ask for these ( they were cold and doughy) Starter (melon) was OK but that was an easy one to get right, cheese platter OK but likewise an easy one as no cooking required. The main course was diabolical- beef in red wine sauce was as tough as old boots, the mash overly salty,
the vegetables were awful - boring trio of uneven sized brocolli florets, carrots, fine beans - brocolli and beans hardly cooked at all. There are now countless good restaurants in the Ipswich area, Mariners and the Salthouse in particular, Seckford should be as good as these, it most definitely isn't. Won't be coming again...

Dear user Marion190725
Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent dining experience here at Seckford Hall - I am sorry that there were operational issues with your lunch and that you did not enjoy your main course. We have had fantastic feedback about the 'slow roast red poll beef' dish, with lots of comments that the beef is particularly tender; I am sorry that the batch from the day in question when you visited appears not to have been the same quality. It is unusual to learn that the horseradish mash and pancetta & red wine sauce served with the dish were salty; thank you for letting us know - your feedback has been passed onto the Head Chef.
Vegetables are cooked 'al dente' at Seckford Hall as this tends to be the preference of our diners - in light of your comments, I will mention in future menu print runs so that customers can choose to have well done vegetables.
We would love to welcome you back to Seckford in the new year, please do contact me personally in order that I can give your booking my personal attention.
With best wishes for the festive season

Rest assured that since the Hotel has been taken over the quality of food and service has remained and even improved according to our Tripadvisor rating.
I am sure you will have a lovely lunch when you visit us later in the month and look forward to reading your review. You will also be able to see the hotel looking splendid as the full hotel is decorated for the Christmas season

Just left this hotel after two lovely days. The hotel is a stunning building which is chock full of original features, worth going for lunch or dinner just for the ambience. Beds and bedrooms very comfy, plenty of room for toiletries in the bathroom and lots of hanging space (both pet hates of mine when there isn't enough). Staff friendly and can't do enough for you. Had a massage which was heaven, it'll be even better next year when the improvements to the leisure centre are made as there will be more spa staff and treatments on offer. A lovely hotel we were definitely 'wowed' and the new owners should be very pleased with their purchase!

'WOW' what a lovely review following your stay with us - it is lovely when our guests choose to post a review following their experience at Seckford Hall.
I am pleased that you enjoyed your new bed and benefited from the hanging space available in the bedroom; it is unfortunate that we didn't have the availability for a second treatment in Flawless Image - the nail bar and pedicure station is now open with plans for additional treatment rooms in the near future.
The Seckford team looks forward to welcoming you back to Suffolk in the near future and thanks once again for the lovely review

Hotel facilities, food and service were very good, congratulations. Club Terrace and pool facilities also very high standard. The only draw back is our stay was marred by first night's sleep interrupted by continous banging of doors from a lower floor and the beat of a disco. No sleep until well after midnight. As a result we checked out after the first night as there was another function booked for the second night.....I need my sleep..! We were adequately compensated, which was fine with us. But as advice to others, please check for party bookings in the hotel as we were not aware of this prior to booking. Room 5 was excellent standard, but it was a shame a restful evening was not possible. Richard and Sandie Franklin.

Room Tip: As we are now into the festive season, please ask whether the hotel has any part functions planned...

Thank you for your review - I am sorry that the wedding disco finishing at midnight marred what looks like a great stay for you. We do hope that this will not deter you from coming back to Seckford in the near future.

My wife and I stayed in this beautiful hotel to celebrate our 20th anniversary of not being married. I've got to say it's one of the best hotels I've stayed in in a long time. We stayed in the Tudor room which is absolutely beautiful with a magnificent fourposter bed. It's got a beautiful large bathroom with rolltop bath and we even watched the TV which is mounted in the wall at one end of the bath. The building itself is just so old and rustic with the creaky oak front door, wonky staircase and courtyard at the back. The breakfast was excellent, the food at dinner was excellent and my scotch egg starter was a revelation. Before you ask I have nothing to do with the hotel, I found it by accident but what a lovely place to stay. Walking to Groombridge was enjoyable, though the weather was a bit inclement. My only observation would be the gym is rather small however in light of all the other excellent points I think it really quite minor. Service was excellent especially from a lady called Skye on reception.
