“A warm Welcome and very friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Always a pleasant stay at this hotel, the staff are like family and very friendly. They just cannot do enough for you. The restaurant, a bit expensive but the food is excellent!!! It is centrally located just below the runs in Newmarket, so you can go out and watch the future winning race horses or just amaze at the number of equine beauties that use the runs. It is a quiet town, with an unbelievable number of excellent good pubs and restaurants to visit.

Having read previous mixed reviews, we decided on this hotel for its central location - and the great deal that we got, including dinner on the first night. Free hotel parking was easy, location in the middle of the High Street was great and staff were all very friendly. Yes the hotel in some areas is 'tired' looking, but we were aware of this before we booked - also that there was no lift available which could be a problem for some people. Food was excellent, bed was clean and comfortable and we had all we needed in our room. Would certainly stay there again and recommend to others - Newmarket and the surrounding areas have much to offer and for our short break this was perfect.

Room Tip: Select ground or first floor room for those with walking difficulties.

we stayed for one night for my birthday the hotel was querky but warm clean and the staff were friendly and very helpful,if you want quiet luxury this hotel is not for you as it is on the main high street and luxurious it is not it is an old hotel with creaky floor boards and wonky walls and floor but this all adds to its charm its comfortable.
there are two downsides to this hotel 1their are no lifts and 4 floors so if you are not good on your pins request a room on the lower floor,2 the restaurant was a deffinate let down the food was not particularly good and totaly over priced i think we would have had a better meal at witherspoons which is just accross the road.having said that the breakfast was fine.
i think this hotel just needs a bit of TLC

Room Tip: ask for a room on the lower floor if you are not very good with stairs as there are no lifts we had...

This bespoke old charm hotel could be so much better with just a little more attention to detail.
On entering courtyard the sign for Reception is facing the wrong way to start with! The staff were extremely pleasant and friendly perhaps a uniform might look more the part there though. In the main foyer you are greeted with a table with a bunch of flowers looking rather like they had been left over from Christmas, surely a nice arrangement of fresh flowers would wake up the senses and first impression! Room 112, nicely decorated and pleasant, bedside lamp didn't work and the wiring and shoddy bath panel let down a really nice old fashioned room.
Bed was extremely comfortable! Prime position to look good.

booked the rutland for a night away with my daughter during half term, the rooms are clean with good amenities, comfortable and a decent size.my young daughter was intrigued with all the old world charm that has been so well maintained. the staff were well presented and made time to talk to my daughter to which she commented how nice everyone was.we had dinner in the restaurant which was nice with a good level of service, breakfast is of good quality with plenty of choice. overall a good choice for a night away with plenty to do with a recommended trip to cambridge the following day.

Thank you for taking the tim to write a review.
I am glad to hear you and your daughter enjoyed your stay with us.
Our staff pride themselves on being warm and welcoming and i am glad that you found them to be this way. The staff work very hard to make sure every guest is made to feel special.
As the hotel is a former coaching inn there are many features that are still original. we try to maintain the period features as best we can to give more character to the hotel. i am glad your daughter enjoyed the period features.
once again thank you for your comments

Visited with family and children, enjoyed our stay.I asked when we booked if we could have two rooms close together, but unfortunatly when we arrived our rooms were at different ends of the hotel.I have to say that the gentleman who was on the desk at the time did his best to accommodate us.After looking on the computer he gave us 2rooms next to each other rooms 101 and 102,which we were very pleased with, and made our stay so much easier.Thankyou.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the side of the hotel where the Reception desk is,although we were told they were all...

A wonderful first stay at the Rutland. Full of character - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would especially recommend it to overseas visitors who would relish this old hotel right the way down to the wonky floors that make you feel drunk even when you're not!!! Rooms were clean and comfortable and breakfast was very nice.
