“Incredible service”

Wild, wacky, large rooms. Delicious, fresh, local food. But most of all friendly, efficient, and incredibly helpful staff. Would recommend to anyone coming to Suffolk.
Particularly enjoyed the slow roast shin of beef.

Called here for a meal and can't think why. The waiter was rude from the start and I should have guessed at the nearly empty dining room as to what the experience was likely to be. The menu was limited and expensive so we expected food to reflect the price especially as we were hungry — it did not. The wine list was extensive and the wives enjoyed their choice. The adnams was up to the usual standard one expects in Suffolk. On the food arriving food presentation was poor.Quantity particularly lacking and in my case fish and chips turned out to be fish and french fries which we all found sadly rather amusing! My wife's Tagliatelle choice was very unappetising and once home she later vomited it up. I felt queasy all night but managed not to repeat my wifes experience. My friends choice of shin was similarly uninterestingly average in taste but eatable if you are hungry. My fiends wife's choice of Lamb from the a la carte menu was ok but nothing special considering the price! Still hungary we had desserts which were in fact good - thank goodness! However I had the cheese plate and I feel the quantity of cheese supplied laughable particularly when compared to the number of biscuits supplied. Service - well the wiatress was very profficient but the waiter was over familiar and had far to much to say of any interest to a good dining experience. We had meals later elsewhere in the area and I have to say all were very very much better. My tips to the cook at this establishment would be to go to Macdonalds if considering serving French Fries again and learn how to cook frozen food better but preferably I would suggest not serve them ever.

Room Tip: Try other local inns first!

Our daughter's wedding reception was recently held at the Black Lion. From the first day when we discussed possibilities with the Manager, Michael, to several days after the wedding when the final details were tied up, we received friendly help, advice and participation from all the staff. Part of the package was the use of all the bedrooms on the night of the wedding, which with many guests from overseas and different parts of England, was invaluable. Nothing was too much trouble for the efficient and friendly staff. All the rooms were comfortable and breakfast was a feast. We cannot thank or praise the Black Lion enough.

A quick note to praise the staff and management of this excellent and friendly hotel and restaurant. The room was very clean and the food in the restaurant was superb. But what stood out for me was the exceptionally friendly and accomodating staff. This hotel and village are well worth a visit.

Thank you to The Black Lion for looking after us so well. Our visit was only intended as an overnight pit stop but we couldn't quite bring ourselves to leave this pretty village in a hurry. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was completely relaxing...a picnic on the green in the sunshine was the final highlight.

Enjoyed a relaxing afternoon browsing the antique shops of Long Melford followed by afternoon tea at the Black Lion. Excellent service, tasty selection of sandwiches, lovely scones & finger cakes. As we were seated in bar area, a traditional English tea atmosphere did not prevail, nor was there a choice of teas (for those wanting that experience would look elsewhere).

The food was good but did not reach the heights of food served in restaurant. All in all a pleasant experience within a friendly bar & fairly good value.

A bit of context: wife and I were attending a soirée nearby, so needed a base for the night (not much of which would be left by the hour of our return).

On the face of it, £125 for a standard double room seemed a bit steep for that kind of purpose. However, The Black Lion welcomes guests from 2pm, so if we’d wanted to, we could have simply relaxed at the hotel for the entire afternoon (a visit to the excellent Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury put paid to that, though). What’s more, on arrival, my request for an upgrade was happily accommodated, which further assuaged the room rate. And a hearty breakfast was included, so all in all, not too bad value.

We were warmly welcomed, first by Melford, the hotel’s resident dog, then swiftly after, by two other members of staff (yes, Melford definitely counts himself as staff). I could end the review there, because these days, a hotel that genuinely appreciates its guests’ presence (without being cloying) deserves five stars straight off – and The Black Lion staff are genuinely appreciative.

There was absolutely nothing to complain about. Just one or two picky things, perhaps (and even then, all redeemed fully by the staff). The front door could have been a touch cleaner around the push-plate (any hotel’s definitive first impression), and some windows and interior glass could have done with a clean. At a glance, all décor was in a reasonable state of repair and finish, though in parts, the time for refreshment could be approaching.

Talking of refreshment, the bar was a sublime haven for a pre-party aperitif, although £12 for a large and small sauvignon is a bit too London in my opinion, but again, redemption was at hand in the ambience and idyllic view of the village green.

Like all the French, Italian and Hungarian wine-named rooms, ours was styled in that kind of boutiquey, shabby-chic, not quite period, not quite contemporary, slightly boudoir-ish style we see quite a lot of in hotels, but still fall for. The beige carpet was all that detracted from the designer feel, and a full-length mirror would have been appreciated. No complaints, though. This was a lovely room to return to late at night.

At breakfast, it was freshly squeezed orange juice and a full English (never seen one so artistically laid out) for me, and Citrus and Camomile-marinated Agen Prunes followed by Black Lion-smoked Haddock with poached egg for the other half. Just the ticket to start a lazy Sunday.

If you’re ever doing the beautiful mid-Suffolk villages, definitely consider The Black Lion. We certainly will if we find ourselves in that neck of the woods again.

Room Tip: 'Volnay' is a sizable room, with living room space and a massive bed (not four-poster).
