“Quality family dinner with friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013 via mobile

Aldeburgh is blessed with many fine restaurants and the White Lion is up there with the best. Our boys aged 9 and 13 loved their meals, particularly the mussels and Skate wing whilst my wife and I had excellent Confit of Duck and the best stuffed courgette ever ( I am not a vegetarian but loved the flavours that burst from that dish). The staff were also attentive and very friendly.

“Not a quiet meal for two”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We booked a table at the restaurant of this highly recommended hotel hoping for a quiet, pleasant meal for two. No such luck.

There was a wedding in the adjacent room which not only meant that we were subjected to sporadic outbursts of male camaraderie but, most intrusively, that wedding guests spent a large part of the evening squeezing through the tiny gap between ours and our neighbours' table in order to reach the bar.

I can imagine that the ambiance might be quite nice in other circumstances but it seems to be a major design fault that provisions are not made to keep wedding discos and private diners separate.

The food was adequate, although I was disappointed that the chef felt it necessary to mask the taste of the 'mussels in garlic and white wine' with what appeared to be a whole raw chopped onion. The bread was also stale. The first time our waitress thought to ask if we'd enjoyed the food or even if everything was O.K was upon taking payment and so this was the first time in many years of eating out that we felt it appropriate to refrain from leaving a tip.

A lovely weekend in a picturesque town almost spoilt by a very disappointing dining experience.

“An average meal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013 via mobile

On a whole this meal on a breezy autumns night was average! However the pre fixe menu was great value with 2 courses for £12. Lots of the food was quite fancy with roast pork being the most basic meal. For dessert the assiete of desserts could hardly have fed a child! (Not good for sharing) the staff were reasonable but not as friendly as they have always been.

“Rather disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Our first impressions weren't good as the barman didn't even greet us but came over eventually and just looked at us. We weren't offered ice in our drinks either. A shame as the bar is lovely and it would have been easy to make us feel welcome.
The waitress was more friendly. Our main courses were all good. One of us had roast pork from the set menu that we thought was particularly good value with nice options on it. We all ordered desserts that when arrived were incredibly small portions - very nice but tiny, so we were a little disappointed with that too.
All in all a nice meal but it would have been easy to make it a great meal. Really nice surroundings with great potential.

“Birthday Supper”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

We went on the Saturday to the Bar and Brassiere to book our table for the following Wednesday evening. Saw it entered on the computer screen and left reassured we had a table. Wednesday evening, and dolled up in our glad rags, we were really put out to find our booking was not recorded.

However we were given a table next to a very doorway, not the best. The staff on the other hand were very good and the meal made up for things. The chef really knows his stuff. The fish cake had a superb flavour and texture, a delicate creation. For a main course we had the sea bass cooked in a lime buttered sauce which surpassed even the fish cake.

We would recommend the food but feel management needs to see the bar staff need to pay more attention to their booking regime.

I assure you this has been addressed with the team in the restaurant. I am pleased to read that the team looked after you and that you enjoyed the food, the sea bass is one of my favourite dishes.
