“Return visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

We returned to The Wheel in February half-term with a mixed group, including several children. The landlord, Dave, was welcoming as usual and the food was as good as always. We sat downstairs, with a real fire blazing behind us.
The Wheel only opens between 12 and 2.30 at lunchtime, with last food order at 2. The same menu is served both at lunchtimes and evenings, with a good selection of items. Food was served quickly and as always with a smile. Always happy to return here!

“A glimpse into what pubs used to be like...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Years ago, before chain pubs and theme bars, with trendy drinks and 2-for-1 menus of pseudo pub grub, inns like The Wheel typified country pubs. Low ceilings with quaint bars, seating at proper tables on chairs and benches, and meals served between set times, The Wheel has not moved one much from where it probably was 50 years ago.
As a fairly regular visitor to this pub, I can vouch for the small changes - this year, the bar has been redecorated to be more open plan and less cramped, but the remainder is as it was - a traditional country inn. Food is served at lunchtime and in the evenings, and the menu gives a good range to suit every taste, including children. Again, it has not changed much over the years - but then, if it's not broke, why fix it? Perhaps more honestly than other establishments, The Wheel are happy to identify what is home made and what is not. My personal favourite is the Stilton, Red Pepper and Mushroom Bake (not as pungent as you may expect).
Service is always prompt and pleasant, and the staff are always accommodating. They have another room upstairs that can be used for dining or booked for parties, however it does not have a separate bar and could do with some decorative improvements in places. However, for hospitality, choice and the best chips in a 10 mile radius, The Wheel is worth a look.

“Terrible customer service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012 via mobile

Hoped for food after a long walk and 6 paying guests were turned away as the kitchen had closed 5 mins earlier. Rude manager wouldn't even offer a sandwich. Can businesses really afford to alienate customers these days?

“proper chips.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

recently decorated, olde worlde pub style to fit in with the style of the place. Nice easy going host, cant do enough to help. Lovely kitchen staff. Pub style homely food, plenty of it, cooked well at a really reasonable price. No frozen chips here - worth a visit for those who like proper chips. Worth popping in for lunchtime specials or a sandwich and chips. Not lavish or posh, just a friendly local clean tidy pub with lovely staff and good food. Give it a go. No long waits for food either.
