“Home for 3 Weeks!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

Recently stayed at The Swan Hotel for 3 weeks while working in the local area. Very good rooms & facilities, ideally situated for visitors to Wells and the surrounding area. Good range of rooms from en-suite singles to the Cathedral Suite with views of the magnificent Cathedral and green. Also a number of self catering fully equipped cottages.

Free parking (a bit tight when full), good gym suite and ideal running routes for those who wish to get out and clock up some miles.

Without doubt, The Swan Hotels best asset is the staff; extremely efficient & courteous, helpful and always cheerful!

Free wifi throughout the public area with a desktop PC for use by those who need full desktop facilities.

Overall, a very pleasant stay in a superb hotel in the smallest city in England but a big welcoming heart.

We had our daughter's christening in the garden room at the swan and it was beautiful. Lovely food and the staff went above and beyond to make our day perfect. Friends and family stayed at the hotel and they really enjoyed there stay.Highly recommend and we will definitely be using this venue again.

We stayed here for our first wedding anniversary last weekend. My husband (always one to look for a top quality stay) booked the Cathedral Suite for 3 nights as a surprise. I had seen the photos on the website before we went and knew he would look for the best room but didn't think it would be the Cathedral Suite. All I can say is, you have to be there to experience it.

The views from the window (especially as the sun shone every day) were incredible and so unique - it was like watching a moving landscape. The size of the rooms were huge, all 3 stunningly appointed with little details like the grandfather clock, bookcase and gramophone player. Everything - from the sumptuous drapes, wallpaper and furniture shouts quality and luxury. And that bath - wow! It was bliss, a real treat to sink into in the afternoon before we headed down for dinner.

As far as the service was concerned - nothing was too much trouble for the staff. It was a lovely touch for the staff to know what room we were in without asking when they took our order for food or drinks. They were always friendly, personable and so attentive - a real credit to the hotel. The restaurant had a cosy and intimate feel about it with a good choice on the menu. Again, the service was excellent.

The city of Wells itself is beautiful too. Visit the Bishop's palace (or at the very least, take a walk round the grounds). We took so many photos of the cathedral and grounds so if you're a keen photographer, make sure you take your camera as there are plenty of opportunities. Even the journey to Wells was lovely - beautiful little villages tucked into the rolling green hills. You can take a day trip to Bath if you fancy some historic culture - there's plenty to see and do.

All in all, a wonderful stay. We will definitely be going back and definitely stay in the Cathedral Suite at the Swan - we're just counting the days!!

I have now stayed at this hotel for the 2nd time. My first review I gave 2 stars and everything had to do with my room, the service and staff were always wonderful. This time I was placed in a modern 2 story suite that had been recently updated. There were still noise from above but that is expected as this is a older historice building. All and all a very pleaseant stay.

Room Tip: Stay with a room number higher than 20.

We were with a group (not young). First shock - NO LIFT!! How come they get 3-stars with no lift? Check-in staff offered help but the valiant and determined chose to scale the stairs. A sherpa would have helped! On the top stair is a heavy glass door (Health & Safety) so you hang on to your case(s), hold the door open with a knee and plunge forward before the bloody thing closes and sends you plunging down to reception again. Fine for Olympic fitness fanatics but no fun when you're over 70! Maybe they could say, "Please leave your luggage at reception and it will be delivered shortly." (just an idea). There are small steps and stairs all over the place - we even had a small stairscase to the en-suite (deadly when you are eager for a pee in the middle of the night). This is a dream of a place for an accident compensation lawyer.
The staff are very friendly, helpful and courteous and do their best so I have no complaint there.
This is an old coaching inn in probably one of the most attractive small towns in England. Our room was at the back, so peaceful and quiet - it was also quite dark with only a small window and the light bulbs seem to hark back to Edison's first experiments (dim, flickering and occasionally popping!).
Food: Atttactive restaurant but as we were in a group we felt the result of cost cutting. A menu including meat, fish and veggy. The lamb and beef dishes (on separate nights) came on the plate in cylinders!!! (yes). An island of tubular shredded meat in a small lake of "jus" - gravy we call it. Among the fish choices were Coley, Pollock and Ling which used to be a favourite of our cat in the days of local fishmongers who provided Haddock and Salmon for the humans. I gave the Coley a chance. It arrived alone, face downon the plate, a segment of a fillet (about 2" square) decorated by a wreath of unknown bits. It didn't look appetising and wasn't. Sweets were good - Bakewell Tart, Sticky Toffee thingy etc. - no moans there.
As I said, we were a group so it was a form of mass catering - "Get 'em in and out so we can get the real money in". You got that feeling we were 2nd class but It was all done with a smile and perfect manners. The couples at other tables seemed to be enjoying the a-la-carte so it must be better that way.
Fancy a pint of local bitter? £3.80 to you, guv! After dinner coffee = £2.50 per cup. (hmmm!!)

Room Tip: Try the Cathedral Suite - fabulous view of Wells cathedral with a price to match. Go on, you deserve...

Thank you for taking the time to post your constructive comments.
Unfortunately some very old buildings and the rambling layouts would only benefit minimally from a lift . We should however always offer assistance.
The door at the top of the stairs is a fire door however there are plans afoot to look into introducing an automatic door to overcome the this issue.
Your observations regarding food are duly noted and will be shared with the Head Chef.
I am pleased you enjoyed our beautiful city and do hope we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back in the not too distant future.
Kind Regards
Terri Chichester

An atmospheric propery, some might feel shabby chic or rather dismal. Our room was very good with comfortable bed, well furnished and equipped. Minor issue on arrival with toilet seat which was immediately remedied. Dinner was excellent on each of our three nights, although did feel additional charge for after dinner coffee was a bit much. Also charge of £2.00 for Latte as opposed to filter coffee for breakfast was 'steep'. Conversley supplements to choose off table d'hote menu as opposed to a la carte seemed very reasonable. Hotel parking a real bonus.

Room Tip: Not many rooms have good outlook. Be specific if you want cathedral view.

without a booking, as we like to do. We were briefly scared by the tiny driveway and seeming lack of parking, but after a LONG day of cruisin', schmoozin', Tor-in', and New Agin', all on what we Yanks call the wrong side of the road, we needed a break so took a chance. Glad we did! The Staff was extremely professional and courteous, yet friendly, and the room with its courtyard was lovely.
