Owner description: Home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years this stunning medieval palace is open for all to enjoy. Surrounded by a breathtaking moat you can cross a flagstone drawbridge, under the portcullis and experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the City of Wells. The Bishop’s Palace dates from the early-thirteenth century when Bishop Jocelin Trotman, the first Bishop to hold the title Bishop of Bath and Wells, received a crown licence to build a residence and deer park on land to the south of the Cathedral of St Andrew. Today visitors can enjoy the medieval palace building, including a vaulted Undercroft and the Long Gallery in which all the portraits of past bishops hang. There are also 14 acres of gardens to explore, including the beautiful well pools from which the city takes its name, family events and guided walks. The Bishop's private Chapel is open to all and sits next to the ruined Great Hall which formerly housed great banquets and celebrations. The world famous mute swans who live alongside the moat and ring a bell when they want food attract a lot of attention; a tradition started by the daughter of Bishop Hervey in the 1870's. Many of the buildings are scheduled ancient monuments and sit alongside recent major developments that include a new café, shop, learning centre, accessible pathways and interpretation. These improvements also include a thriving new Community Garden and a contemporary Garden of Reflection.

“Amazing architecture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

I loved these gardens - the use of the old palace in the garden design creates special vista. It is worth going on a guided tour to get the most from the space and to hear the stories about the planting. But also a lovely space for quiet contemplation as there are plenty of quiet corners.

Hello,
Pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit and especially found the guided tour useful and interesting. Our gardens have had a bumper year this year and we can't wait to see them move into autumn.
Thanks so much for the great review, hope you visit again one day.

Lovely place to visit just for a coffee or for a walk around the palace and gardens. Beautiful and a great place for a picnic with young children.

“Beautiful, peaceful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

Could not enter Palace because of the dogs, but that's not a complaint! There was a fantastic whicker dragon with whicker nest and eggs in the gardens. The reflection of the palace in one of the ponds was wonderful.

Hi Eileen, Thanks for the 5 star review. Glad you got to enjoy the gardens with the dogs. Yes, sadly we can't allow dogs inside as we need to protect the collections and portraits but I'm really pleased you enjoyed the gardens and saw the reflection in the well pool - one of my favourite spots!

The gargoyles here are actually much better than at the cathedral, & the lake & gardens are so beautiful.
