“Soundproofing please!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Lovely hotel, lovely staff. But woke in the night to strange Noises... Sadly not ghosts but the foul-mouthed couple upstairs swearing, giggling and bonking!!! Sounds like they were making a porno movie. We could hear everything as though they were in the same room as us - not good. We stayed in the first floor, room 2 Abbot Devere room, we could hear upstairs word for word and everything that went on in the bar downstairs. Listening to conversations word for word is not our deal, so we left early.

Room Tip: Not room 2

My wife and I stayed at the George and pilgrim last week, the breakfast and breakfast staff are very good. Evening meals are not value for money I had Beef stem and dumplings. There was only one small piece of beef and the dumpling was no bigger than a conker. I did point this out and it feel on deaf ears.
The rooms are very basic the bedding is clean which is more than can be said about the rooms, top of TV, skirting, ect dusty and the shower the tiles are dirty.
They have a good local cider but the beer is poor New Castle brown is a safe option if you do not drink cider.
If they put as much effort into looking after the place as they had done decorating for Halloween there would be no need for this review.
If you have not been to this area I would recommend you stay outside the area and drive in each day.

My wife and I stayed in the George and Pilgrims in the days leading up to halloween 2012, we watched the "Zombie Walk" from outside the hotel. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was good and everyone was very friendly. Our room was full of character, clean and comfortable. Altogether it was a most enjoyable experience. We had never been to Glastonbury before, we look forward to visiting the area again and will be staying at the George and Pilgrims.

we came to glastonbury for the faerie ball just across the road from the hotel,so the location couldn't be better, after some of the reviews on here i was almost worried as to what we were going to find, but we had an excellent stay although we only stayed for one night, the starff where really friendly and went out of there way to help us,even carrying our huge coolbox down 2 flights of stairs for us,and also finding out info about ghoast hunts for us without us asking, even getting us some ghostly pics from previous guests to look at,the food was delicious, our room was clean and warm.and really quite cozey, with just about the right amount of character,we would come back to glastonbury just to stay in this hotel and obviously for fantastic history this town has in bucket loads and the wicked little shops that it has an abundance off!! its an amazing town, and staying at this historic hotel really made it for us! we will be back next year, and i can't wait, didnt see anything spooky though, sadly! may even try one of the ghost hunt nights! i love how you can almost feel the history spilling through the place,so its a little shabby in places, but thats its charm.we found the people friendly and welcoming, only not giving it a 5 as i think checkout could possibly be untill 12.00,and breckfast untill 10.00,other wise excellent.

There is something rather sad about this hotel. There is nothing really wrong with it - but nothing really right with it either. It is a beautiful architecturally with stunning stone work and mullioned windows but it feels like it is only just 'getting by' and that the owners could, with a cash injection make so much more of the place.
We stayed mid-week for 2 nights in October 2012.
It is in a great position right on the High Street but no parking. There is a car park at the back with 3 allocated places - these are never free and I wonder if it is the staff using them? Luckily for us, the parking ticket machines were out of order but it was a constant worry in case they got mended and we were then caught out. We stayed in the Abbot de Bere room (number 2) which is over the bar and over the street. It was quite noisy to start with (feels like you are in the bar!) but, to be fair, between 11pm and 7am it was all quiet though if there was a function at the weekend I think it could be very different.
Breakfast is only served between 8 and 9 AND you have to vacate by 10am which I think is far too early. My impression is that by cramming the main staff activity into the morning, that the owners are saving money.
We ate here on our first night as we couldn't find anywhere else open. Very boring menu but what we had was hot and ok - just ...dull.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at the front

We found the atmosphere great and the staff friendly and helpful. The bar food was wholesome and well presented and the breakfast excellent. The room was a reasonable size and clean and the shower worked well.
The only downside was a group of idiots in an adjoining building deciding to sing and yell at 2:40 in the morning, this carried on for over an hour before they eventually shut up. The hotel staff were sympathetic but of course this was outside of their control.
I would definitely stay again but bring ear plugs just in case.

We stayed for 3 nights in a room for 3 people. As there was only the 2 of us we therefore had lots of space - more like having a suite, as the sofa bed for person No 3 was in a seperate area like a lounge with the TV and coffee facilities.

Bed was comfy and room was warm (too warm at times, but better than cold!). Bathroom was clean and adequate. Shower was powerful and warm. Couldn't get any cold (really cold) water out of the sink tap for a drink one morning - had to run the hot tap at the same time to get even cool water out the cold tap. How odd.

Decor in the room was a bit tatty; a lick of paint may be needed, and the carpet needs cleaning. And there were a few good cobwebs on the ceiling, but nothing to get too upset about. Every floor board in the room, the corridor and on the stairs creaks! Which is not surprising given the age of the place, but I don't know how the people below us felt about that on our return at 3AM one morning!!! It was impossible to move around quietly.

The bar and bar staff were very nice. We used the restaurant once and it was all perfectly good pub grub, though the waiter couldn't pronounce spratts for some reason. Breakfast was good, though I don't like being told which table to sit at.

My absolute only real problem was the car parking. There are allocated hotel spaces for maybe 5 cars. Other guests have to use the pay and display car park at the back of the hotel, which has odd times that you can/can't stay, no return within 2 hours etc. Luckily for us the machines were out of service all weekend, so it didn't cost us a penny! But I imagine it could be expensive and it isn't made clear on the website.
