“Dunster”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

Without a doubt one of the prettiest places in which we have ever stayed. We stayed in the Porlock room and it felt as if we were privileged to sleep there. The Inn(?) is so well managed and owned by Cliff and Tricia. Before dinner drinks were very appreciated and breakfast the following morning was wonderful.
A worthwhile experience in all manners.
Thank you very ,much for having us

Wonderfully attentive hospitality, excellent breakfast cooked to perfection including very taste homemade bread; lovely rooms all with a warming and welcoming atmosphere but most of all a beautiful house full of history and character – it was a honour to be able to stay there. Will definitely visit again.

We stayed two nights in this delightful luxury hotel, a wonderfully warm welcome when we arrived which continued all through our stay, nothing was too much trouble, I have to confess that I have never come across a place where the hosts go to such lengths to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Wonderful character place where the breakfast is a dream, early evening pre diner drinks are of a selection which is out of this world, Cliff is a mine of information on wines and where to eat in Dunster and Tricia is a Chef par excellence, 5 Stars isn't enough for the experience you get staying here....Can't recommend this place enough. Many thanks to Cliff and Tricia for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: It won't matter, all the rooms are superb.

The warmest welcome, a lovely characterful room and a superb breakfast. Do try the whisky's and seek Cliff's council on where to eat at night. A real pleasure and treat from arrival to departure, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Do not miss out on this wonderful haven of peace and calm

We stayed for a couple of nights last week. I have got to stay in a lot of places because of my job but I think that I can honestly say that I have never come across a place where the hosts go to so many pains to ensure a comfortable stay. Although dating back to the fifteenth century, the place is spotless and superbly appointed. Cliff and Tricia have thought of everything you can ever need. There are lots of lovely thoughtful touches like fresh milk provided every morning for in room tea making. A stereo system and a few CDs were provided for our pleasure and a decanter of Masala was provided in the room.

There is a very pleasant lounge area for guests and Cliff, who is clearly a connoisseur of the good things in life very kindly offers "something in a glass" for those who wish to partake or alternatively tea and coffee served the "proper" way from a nice tea service and a huge choice of different types of tea. When we came to settle up, he would not accept payment for these kind touches. It was all included in the price.

Breakfast has to be experienced to be believed! Only the finest local ingredients are used and it is simply a gastronomic adventure. I opted for the poached haddock each morning and it was simply superb. My wife enjoyed the local trout and conventional 'full English' can also be had. The orange juice is so fruity and only as you would normally get in Spain or the States. The way the whole meal is served is an experience in gracious living.

In terms of location, Spears Cross is in the middle of the village, just next to one of the castle entrances. The village is small and everywhere is walkable. We particularly enjoyed evening meals at the Stag which is just across the road. Paking is available for two or three cars but more than that may mean that you have to park in the nearby streets or in the Castle's pay and display.

All in all, it is the top of the tree in terms of B+Bs. It sets the standard that other B+Bs should aspire to. A little on the pricey side but well worth the money. If we could give it six stars, we would. We'll be back! Thanks for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Arrive early if you want to park your car in the yard.

After a long journey, we received a warm, friendly welcome and truly enjoyed our short break. The owners went over and above the call of duty for us and it was richly appreciated. Great food, very clean, very pleasant all around. We will return in the future!

This is definitely a place to remember... We experienced a warm welcoming by Cliff and Tricia upon our arrival! Our room was amazing - antique style decoration, comfortable and very clean! The breakfast was an authentic feast of flavour and good quality food. In addition, Cliff's tips on places to visit were top-notch!
