“An incredible find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

This has to be the best hotel I have stayed in for a long time. Having read other excellent reviews, we were certainly not disappointed. On our arrival our luggage was taken inside and we were offered tea and cake (highly recommended!). Our room was full of charm and had everything you could ever need and was spotless. Cliff and Tricia could not have been more welcoming and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. They richly deserve every accolade that has been bestowed upon them and I will certainly be looking to stay here again next time I visit Dunster. Thank you for a fantastic stay!

Having not long returned form a two day stay with Cliff and Tricia, i can say that we will be retuning sooner rather than later.

We had not read any of the excellent reviews on here, but had been introduced to Spears Cross by good friends, that in itself should say everything, recommendation is to us what it is all about.

The welcome, the service, the breakfast, all excellent and surpassed expectations.

We could not recommend this establishment more if we tried.

Our room The Porlock, oozed character, and was clean and extremely comfortable.

If you are looking at booking to stay here and don't, then you have missed out.

Room Tip: Rooms are mostly very old and quirky, make sure you read the accessibility statement on their websit...

We had read the reviews in Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. This is an excellent little B&B. Cliff & Trish are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble. The attention to detail is probably what makes this place stand out from the rest. If you are visiting the area we can highly recommend the Spears Cross.

From the moment we arrived untill we left we were treated execptionally well and looked after. Cliff was very helpful and managed to book us a table at The Stags Head for dinner when it was not easy to get a table. Thanks also for the offer to drive us to Minehead, but we did walk it okay and also the South Costal Way!

Both Colin and I agree with everything that is said about Spears Cross, perfection!!! Where else would you be greeted with tea and cake on arrival and silver napkins holders at breakfast!! Tricia and Cliff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, everything is within easy reach of their hotel, and a glass of wine before we went out to dinner just capped the experience. We really should have asked for the marmalade and goosberry preserve to take home. It was delicious on their home made fruit bread. Perhaps another time, to be sure.

We cannot speak highly enough of the hospitality shown to us by Cliff and Trish. The rooms are really well decorated and furnished with en-suite bathrooms. We stayed in the annex suite to the rear of the property which was fabulous. The decanter of massala wine left with chocolates, after your bed has been turned down, is a really thoughtful touch.

Dunster itself is a lovely place to visit, and Exmoor is a great place to explore on foot or by bike. Cliff is happy to recomend a number of local eateries, all of which are also excellent. All specialise in using local produce when possible.

The breakfasts at the Spears are becoming something of a legend, and justifyably so. The standard of produce is fantastic, and all cooked to perfection. The traditional English breakfast is more than enough to set you up for the day. All locally sourced food. I also really enjoyed the smoked haddock with poached eggs, whilst my wife had the smoked trout. Again, both fabulous.

With a good selection of wines and whiskeys if you desire in the evening, or fresh coffee and tea on tap accompanied by fresh baked cakes, your warm welcome is assured.

We will be back.

Room Tip: The annex is worth the extra money. Its like having an appartment/flat to yourself, with its own sep...

Right next to Dunster Castle, epic breakfasts with the best quality local ingredients (the black pudding was to die for), top notch rooms and a decanter of marsala to go to bed with. We could not have wished for a better place to stay exploring Exmoor, Linton, etc, and could not have been better looked after.

Room Tip: Hope you like church bells ! The Selworthy Suite faces the church - if you leave the windows open yo...
