“Nice for lunch...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

Ate here after a lovely visit to Dunster Castle from Watchet via the steam railway. Dunster appears well equipped with places to eat, and we were somewhat spolit for choice...after an enjoyable amble along the main street we landed up outside the Castle Hotel, and decided to try it out. Staff are very welcoming, and we were told that there are several eating areas...from the entrance door if you turn left there are comfy sofas and coffee tables, ahead an olde worlde beamed area (already packed with happy eaters including families with small children), and to the right was a more formal area (think 1980's/indian restaurant in styling plenty of burgundy and gold). We were told we could eat from the same menu in all of these areas, and plumped for the sofas. The menu was varied, and evidently catering for all tastes and appetite sizes...our order was a basic cheese and pickle sandwich and a salmon and cream cheese bagel. Sitting in this spot meant that you could watch the chefs cooking as it has an open-plan style, and it was wonderful to watch them take the same time and consideration over our basic meal as some of the other orders...they were doing a fantastic job - the burgers were a masterpiece of engineering with skewers to hold the stack in place, and their own mini chip fryer nets! Needless to say our food was fantastic...beautifully presented on slate platters. Having worked in 'hospitality' myself in the past what struck me was the good relationships amongst the staff...you could tell they were happy working here; and I always think that positivity reflects on the atmosphere created for the customer. Well done to all of the staff...oh and finally the bill was a real surprise...VERY reasonable prices : )

Very impressed with the staff, service and quality of catering at this hotel. Particularly enjoyed evening meal with the family (who were staying elsewhere). Room was a bit warm, but it did not spoil our stay.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. We booked a standard room and were in the attic room No 6, which overlooks the church at the back and the high street at the front. Had the noise from the church bells on the quarters, half and the hour and from the street. Very pleasant carillon but not at 1am! Nice views though, both sides. Could even see the sea and Hinckley Point power station.
Nice room with good facilities, comfortable and clean.
We dined in the hotel and the food was good but just, somehow, missed the mark from being excellent. Breakfast was very good and well cooked.
I would stay again.

Booked here for a wedding in the area. After reading a few reviews I rang to say I had mobility issues and ask for a low level room. We were given the 'stables' room - each of the eight rooms have a name. This room was NOWHERE NEAR a four star !!. The room was off the main high street which wasn't an issue for us but it was noisy, the floor was very uneven and when in bed I felt as if I was falling out as it was on a slope! There a was a steep step up to the shower room which was tiny but thankfully clean. The bed was ok beside but the headboard was chipboard covered in some nasty dirty material and was disgusting. The 'stable' door keeper was wedged into the wood and had no screws in it - however when we transferred this information to the waitress/cleaner she said she never had any problem with the door! The room smelt of damp (which was why the windows were always kept open) and the windows could have done with a clean. The breakfast area was pleasant but the bar area looked tired and scruffy. The beer garden was again scruffy and was not looked after with a few benches on a bit of uneven grass. No hanging baskets - ugly. other friends in the hotel were not impressed - one room was right by the generator. There were much nicer places to stay - I wish I had done more research but I thought this would be of a good standard. sadly disappointed would not recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: if you have mobility issues book somewhere else - The Luttrell Arms has nice rooms and you only have...

Just spent three nights here with my daughter visiting family in the area .have stayed in Dunster and the area many times and know it well as my family originates from Porlock area.
This has to be the best choice ever(weather did help,it usually rains when we come down!!)
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, twin room was good size, all facilities, the food first class and plenty of choice, nothing too much trouble, large car park at back.
The only thing I would reccomend is a room at back as our twin room at front overlooked the road and traffic lights in use constantly in use, quite noisy if light sleeper!

But this did not spoil our stay, diet starts today!

Room Tip: Room at the back,quieter..

We stayed for two nights in the 'value' room and we can't fault the location - Dunster is lovely. But I don't really think the hotel should be a 4 star. The rear access through through the cellar bar (also reception!) isn't great and the bar itself is pretty scruffy. Our room was a bit tired and could have done with a good clean and a lick of paint.

However, the restaurant looks great and breakfast was fantastic. We ate in the bar on our first night and although the food was OK, the portions were small and I think it was overpriced. The Luttrell Arms has a much better bar and would be my recommendation for food or drink.

Room Tip: Don't go for 'Value' rooms, even though it was still £90!
