When we arrived at Dorset Villa it was dark, we had already explained to the owners that we would be there after 9 o’clock. Thankfully we found our reserved parking, we had not been given any directions how to reach it, it was behind where we were staying and very awkward access. There was no-one to greet us, a note and our key awaited us in the hall, this didn’t surprise me as it was the only negative I’d read prior to arrival. However, it was quite disturbing that anyone could have walked in and helped themselves to our keys/room.
The room was at the top of the building, we climbed two flights of very dirty stair carpet to our door, it was dim lighting but even in this dimness one could see that it was in dire need of a good clean, lick of paint and new furnishings.
My friend and I entered our ‘family room’, it was a reasonable size room containing two double beds and well worn furniture, and a continuation of the dirty carpet, our Pollyanna attitudes tried to make light of our surroundings. My friend sat on the sofa, which collapsed; laughing I pulled open a drawer to unpack and the drawer knob came off in my hand!
Neither of us are fuss-pots but when my friend pulled out her wipes on seeing the filthiness of the bathroom I began to worry. We had no shower, only a bath, which would not have bothered me at all, had the bath been clean. Had they cleaned the room? Well someone had been in as they had very kindly left a cigarette end in the bathroom bin!
Cobwebs hung from the ceiling, bulbs in the light fitting were dead, the covers on the beds had ribbon which hung all over the floor. The curtains were filthy, especially at the bottom where they touched the window ledge. My friend announced that even the plastic flowers were dead! They were doubled up and like everything else in the room were dirty and full of dust.
The night passed and we tried to joke about our surroundings, which incidentally were costing us £85 a night, £7.50 for our parking too. Morning came and we dubiously went down to breakfast, again it was a room in need of a clean, we asked for tea, (I was dubious of the water pipes as my friend had tried to make a cup the night before and it was full of scum) once again on pouring the tea it was scum-like and when the milk was poured in, it separated. Breakfast arrived, very quickly, it was tasteless, and I didn’t touch the sausage as it had a sponge like quality when I touched it with my knife. My friend discovered after a bite hers was raw!
We went into Bath that morning, our host asked us what we were going to do, he didn’t ask us what we thought of the place, just as well! Immediately I received a text message from my husband saying he’d looked up where we were staying and how it had received terrible reviews, that he was sorry to be negative but that he was genuinely worried about us, some of the reports had even contained ‘bed bugs’. This was the final straw, we went straight to the tourist information who informed us that they had dropped ‘Dorset Villa’ two years previously from their recommendations as they had so many complaints, she seemed surprised it was still trading!
She couldn’t have been more helpful, booking us into a B&B in nearby Saltford, (a wonderful couple, Lynne and Steve Brown who own Kendall House, very reasonable rates and a beautifully clean/kept house and a delicious breakfast! Saltford is about 4 miles out on the A4, it’s a lovely village, you perhaps wouldn’t realise this from the A4, its worth the drive out, there are regular buses into Bath, they stop right outside Kendall House) so, we returned to ‘Dorset Villa’ and packed up all our stuff, the proprietor was surprised to see us ready to leave, we paid what we owed for the one night, when he asked why were we leaving, I told him we didn’t like the accommodation, he asked why, I told him because it was dirty, he didn’t argue, he just kept saying ‘ok’, the following day when driving past we saw ‘no vacancies’ another poor unsuspecting person had obviously booked in…….better sleep on the streets, they are cleaner!
