“Exceptional. The reviews are true.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

We needed a place to stay for 2 nights in November to visit the Xmas Market in Bath - close enough to the centre to walk, but with a car parking facility as we were driving from Sussex. We like our comforts so we have relied on Tripadvisor reviews in the past. Hill House was in the top 4 B&Bs for Bath and the reviews were good so we booked online (v.easy) and were not disappointed.
We were sent a helpful email from the owners which offered assistance, and gave accurate directions as well as helpful tips about local eateries. We were greeted by Harry who helped with our bags and directed us to a nearby parking space, giving us a residents parking permit so we were able to leave the car for the duration of our stay without any cost. Then Harry supplied tea and biscuits whilst he talked to us about all the things we wanted to do. His local knowledge and happy disposition helped make our trip very relaxing. The room (Room 5 - right at the top) was large and warm, with a very comfortable bed, and nice little touches like the cool milk container and what seemed to be home-made biscuits. The shower room and shower were also large, with quality soaps, shampoos and hand creams. The accommodation was lavishly furnished and was immaculately clean. Everything worked and I could not fault anything. The breakfast experience needs a special mention. With only 12 guests we all sat at one large table - excellent for chatting and sharing experiences - often the chat was started by Harry as he came back and forth with the cooked breakfasts - 2 choices - a full English or each day there was a 'special', for example I had Eggs Benedict on one day and potato cakes and poached eggs on another day - all the cooking would have been worthy of a first class restaurant. In addition, although I could not have fitted it all in, there was a self-service buffet with fresh fruit, cereals, juice, etc. but of a similarly high quality to the cooked meals.
This place is better than a hotel because the comfort, the food and the hospitality are all first class; you simply do not get this level of personal touch in hotels.
And finally, many thanks to Douglas on talking me through his tips on cooking perfect poached eggs.

Room Tip: Room 5 is at the top and overlooks the side street so may have been slightly quieter than room 6 ove...

We stayed at Hill House for two nights last weekend to celebrate my birthday. We arrived earlier than we expected but we were given a really warm welcome. Our room was at the top of the house and was fab, the bathroom was lovely! The breakfast was amazing and there was a different choice each morning. Nothing was overlooked and they couldnt do enough to make sure our stay was the best it could be. The location is great, a short walk away from everything! We had an amazing stay and can't wait to go back!

We stayed at Hill House for two nights to visit the spa and Christmas markets. We arrived early, around 11.30 am, but our room was already available for us to relax and unpack before we headed off for lunch. We stayed in Room 1 which is beautifully furnished, with a really comfortable bed and lovely shower. The only slight downside is that, being at the front with a main road and pub just outside, and sash windows, it was quite noisy at night. If you're sensitive to this you should ask for one of the rooms at the back. We were provided with fresh milk to make tea, and some lovely shortbread biscuits. One thing I would have liked is proper glasses for water rather than plastic ones. Breakfasts were plentiful and delicious, and we really enjoyed breakfasting around a large table with the other guests - we had some interesting chats and don't think this would have happened if we had been sitting at separate tables. Altogether, a very comfortable stay and handy for the centre of Bath.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to noise choose a room at the back of the house.

We stayed at the Hill House for the weekend in November to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday with our friends. I had read such great reviews and wasn't at all disappointed.

On finding out it was a 40th birthday celebration our room was upgraded at no extra cost so we could have a sofa to socialise with our friends. My husband also didn't know our friends were joining us and Harry and Douglas helped with the surprise and provided champagne glasses for our fizz!

On arrival we were made a nice cup of tea with biscuits whilst Harry gave us the rundown on Bath which was really helpful.

Our room (Room 2) was beautiful along with the rest of the house. Everything is so personalilsed, not at all like staying in a bog standard hotel or B&B and such lovely quality. I loved all the finishing touches, like the posh bathroom products provided, the luxury bed linen, and how the table was laid at breakfast.........

The breakfast was delicious, fresh fruit, granola and yogurt to start with and then either a cooked breakfast or breakfast of the day.

Location is great, yes it is at the top of a hill, but you are close to all the attractions, and I actually welcomed the walk up the steep hill after eating and drinking far too much!

Harry and Douglas were so accomodating, nothing was too much trouble and I would definitely recommend the Hill House to friends visiting Bath.

Room Tip: The Hill House is on a busy road and the windows are only single glazed, so there is some road noise...

Hill House offers very nearly everything you could wish from a premium bed and breakfast. A friendly welcome - tea served in the dining room on arrival was a particularly nice touch - a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere, a beautifully decorated, well-equipped, comfortable room (complete with enough shortbread to spoil your dinner) and an excellent breakfast.

It's not quite perfect. A flipside of the convenient location is some traffic noise in the front-facing rooms at peak times, although I hear this will soon be remedied with new soundproofing. And I'd have preferred to make my breakfast selection on the spot rather than the night before - though I appreciate that this reduces food wastage.

But those are minor details. In every important way, Hill House is spot on - particularly impressive considering it hasn't been open long. We are already making plans to return.

Simply the best B&B we've ever stayed in with the most helpful and kind staff! The rooms are generous in size and the the bathroom was huge with gorgeous White Company toiletries and impeccably cleaned every day. The place is full of character throughout whilst remaining simple and chic. Breakfast is superb, a small continental buffet of the highest quality, with cereals and fruits and cooked breakfasts to order. Best eggs Benedict ever!
If you can get a room here then take it! We'd definitely go back!

Really enjoyed the stay and felt really welcome. Decor is very well thought through and attention to detail is remarkable. One of the most important thing for me when staying over somewhere is the cleanliness and guys scored full marks in this area as well as in the food department with a hearty breakfast. I am thinking about running b&b in the future and guys set an example towards which I would want to strive.

Room Tip: We stayed on the top floor and the ceiling in that room is a bit lower than in the standard room. I...

Welcome to our home! Hill House was built in 1765 at the end of a Georgian terrace behind the Assembly rooms in Central Bath. Built originally as a hotel it later became a wine merchants and then a pub. The current owners purchased the property in 2011 and have updated the property throughout. The modernisation has been sympathetically undertaken to retain as much of the period of charm of the property as possible. The property now has six en suite letting rooms located one at the front and one at the back on each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of the property. All bedrooms are equipped with newly appointed shower rooms, 32” digital Televisions, hairdryers and free wifi. The more the stairs the better the views from the rooms across Bath to the countryside beyond!Breakfast is served in our dining room on one large table, where reccomendations of what to see and where to eat are shared. Besides a choice of cereals etc we also offer a choice of two cooked breakfasts per day which vary throughout the week. We are able to cater for most dietary requirements but ask for as much notice as possible as we do not carry some items as stock as we are only a small establishment. This is our home and we want you to be able to relax in it. We have ironing facilities and a house sewing kit to hand. If you need anything else please ask and we will see what we can do.Hill House is a 2 minute walk from the Assembly Rooms and five minutes from the main shopping centre and Royal Crescent. There are plenty of local places to eat and drink close by and we would be happy to give recommendations upon request. On street Parking permits are available but will need to be reserved. ... more   less
