We stayed one night at this lovely hotel for our tour of Bath. The staff was welcoming and very hepful from recommending activities to reservations for dinner. Our room was spacious with comfortable beds and a nice view of Bath. Our bathroom was the largest we've had in Europe with a whirlpool tub and large towel warmer. Breakfast was made to order and delicious.

We recommend an afternoon break for tea at the Pump Room. We had an expensive, but great lunch of fish and chips from a shop in town. We enjoyed dinner at Ring o Bells just a short walk from the hotel.

Oldfields is an excellent lodging choice for Bath. Hard to believe we got such great quality for such a reasonable price.

Oldfields is in a home with a lot of character. However there is nothing dated about it. The public rooms are very nice. The dining room has nice views overlooking some of the hills surrounding Bath. The lounge area is especially lovely. There was a fire burning constantly (not a wood fire). There were fresh flowers placed about. There is a self-service tea and coffee area in the corner. During the evening candles are lit.

We were in room #15. This is the most economical room in the hotel. We were very pleased with it. Yes, it is small but we had expected that, so it was fine. It was very stylishly decorated in a modern minimalistic style that worked surprisingly well in that setting. There was a wall mounted flat screen television and a kettle for making tea and coffee. The bathroom was very nice- again smallish, but looked to be brand-new and the shower was great. The toiletries were fabulous- Moulton Brown. I had heard of these British products and was glad I had the opportunity to try them, they didn't disappoint. I had been a little apprehensive about this room due to the earlier negative review (someone had posted a photo of the door crack in this room) detailing problems with this room. I needn't have worried. The door had a very small crack at the very top- but, come on, this is an older house. I'll take the character of the old building and live with small flaws like this. It wasn't a problem at all, and I really value privacy. I would barely have noticed it if it had not been brought to my attention beforehand. On the contrary, this room was especially appealing due to the sense of privacy it afforded us. We were at the top of a landing with only one other room across from us- and it was a single. Our room was very quiet and private. A definite bonus.

Breakfast was very good. Jams are good- Bonne Maman- and are in single serve glass containers, which is nice- no communal jam pots. There is a nice fruit salad put out each day. There were also cereals and yogurts. We each had full English breakfasts, they were good. One day we had the vegetarian breakfast and didn't enjoy the soy sausage, and we eat these often at home. If you want a peaceful and relaxing breakfast, I recommend arriving when they first begin serving, at 8:30. This establishment does a brisk business and is usually completely full on weekends and has a nice crowd during the week. By the time we finished breakfast, around 9:10 am, it would be fairly hectic.

Oldfields is in a great location- very close to downtown. The main thing I wanted to emphasize in my review is the gross exaggeration regarding the infamous hill. Lol. I was shocked!!! I had read all the reviews by Brits that there would be this formidable hill to trudge up to reach Oldfields. Well, when we reached Wells Road, we were actually standing on the street looking at our map and looking for a street marker in vain to figure out where we were. Even though we knew that we should be standing on Wells Road at that point we were frantically looking around in search of the steep hill everyone had been writing about. Well, after a very kindly man stopped (in the rain and carrying groceries!!) to offer us directions and confirmed we were, indeed, on Wells Road we were incredulous. Turns out the much discussed hill was a gentle slope. Folks, this is a very easy walk from the train station. If you follow the directions that are sent to you at your confirmation (web site directions might not take into consideration a present construction project) you will be fine. We walked with our, albeit light, luggage in a light rain from the train station and we were fine. It would be considerate of the proprietors to also give directions from the coach station. The coach station is in a temporary location due to construction so I was unable to find reliable directions online from the coach station to the train station. We had a difficult time finding our way from the coach station to the train station, which is where the starting point for directions to Oldfields began. It was pretty miserable, cold and wet, and there isn't a taxi stand at the coach station, so that wasn't even an option. Please, Oldfields, take pity on your future guests and given directions from the coach station too!

The only negative comment I have to make about the hotel is that the commode (toilet) hadn't been cleaned before our arrival- the bowl nor the seat. It was an obvious fact, I'll spare you the details. This was probably just an oversight because the rest of the room *and* bathroom were very clean but I do feel obligated to mention it.

Expensive for a B&B, but GREAT value as an alternative to a four star hotel. Rooms are gorgeous and really well equipped. Breakfast was gourmet quality! Staff friendly, and location excellent! Quadruple glasing and a/c, provided a great nights sleep. Definitely stay here again!

“Top Quality B&B”

Oldfields Hotel

Feb 29, 2008

We booked a 3-night stay at Oldfields Hotel for February 2008, on the basis of the good reviews on this site. That they managed to exceed our expectations says a lot about the way this hotel is run!

I telephoned the hotel to book our room, and received a confirmation email within half an hour. On arriving at the hotel, we were warmly greeted and shown through to the Drawing Room, where the manager ran us through the details of the hotel, how to get into the city centre, recommended restaurants and things to do.

Our room was right at the top of the hotel, with a dormer window looking out over the garden. The room was not enormous, but perfectly comfortable for two. The decor was fresh, light and modern, with a good sized desk/dressing table, two armchairs, a comfortable double bed, flatscreen TV and tea/coffee making facility. The bathroom was decorated to a high standard, and most importantly, clean.

As other reviewers have indicated, the Drawing Room is equipped with a laptop with internet access, which is free for all residents to use. There is also an open fire, and free tea/coffee. Breakfast is served in an adjacent room, offering a comprehensive selection of cereals, fruit salad and fruit juices (and even Cava when we were there!) plus a choice of cooked breakfast (Full English, Vegetarian or Smoked Salmon & Egg) and toast. I would definitely rate it as one of the best hotel breakfasts I have had.

When the hotel website says that it is located 10 minutes' walk from the city centre, this is not the usual exaggeration that you'd expect. My wife and I managed to get down the hill in 10 minutes at a fairly gentle amble. The walk back up from the city takes a little longer, as you're going uphill - but at least that makes you feel a little less guilty about breakfast the next morning!

The carpark at the hotel is on the small side, however parking permits are available at reception for parking in the road outside the hotel, which is a fairly quiet side street.

In conclusion, this hotel (really a B&B, as they don't serve any meals other than breakfast, but let's not be picky!) really is at the top standard for the UK in terms of friendly service, decent facilities and attention to detail. When we go back to Bath, we will stay here again, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Oldfields to friends or relations.

We returned to this hotel having had a lovely stay a year previously. We were in Bath to visit the Christmas market, and Oldfields was the perfect base once again. We had a lovely large room on the ground floor, and they were very welcoming to our young baby. The roaring fire in the sitting room was the perfect welcome after a cold day's shopping, and the breakfast was lovely.
