Stayed here in April 2007 with my husband on a romantic break. The hotel is a little bit dated and in need of some TLC but the room itself was very good; spacious and the bed was about the size of a football pitch!
We were only staying for a long weekend but during this time, an incompetent (admittedly new) waiter spilt hot soup over me and also brought the ladies on the next table a cream tea when they'd clearly asked for green tea. That was more amusing than the burnt legs from the soup, however I do appreciate these things happen and the poor lad was probably just nervous and his grasp of English was not that hot.
Overall, the room was top notch, but the hotel really needs a lick of paint and some minor refurbishment to justify the prices it charges. You can tell it used to be a very grand hotel but it just isnt any more. The reception staff were quite curt, the waiter was having a very bad day and at breakfast the staff were practically non-existent.
I wouldn't tell anyone not to stay there but I have stayed in better hotels for a considerably lower price than the Francis charges.
