“Ok but a little dated now”

Mercure Francis Hotel

Mar 15, 2008

Stayed here in April 2007 with my husband on a romantic break. The hotel is a little bit dated and in need of some TLC but the room itself was very good; spacious and the bed was about the size of a football pitch!

We were only staying for a long weekend but during this time, an incompetent (admittedly new) waiter spilt hot soup over me and also brought the ladies on the next table a cream tea when they'd clearly asked for green tea. That was more amusing than the burnt legs from the soup, however I do appreciate these things happen and the poor lad was probably just nervous and his grasp of English was not that hot.

Overall, the room was top notch, but the hotel really needs a lick of paint and some minor refurbishment to justify the prices it charges. You can tell it used to be a very grand hotel but it just isnt any more. The reception staff were quite curt, the waiter was having a very bad day and at breakfast the staff were practically non-existent.

I wouldn't tell anyone not to stay there but I have stayed in better hotels for a considerably lower price than the Francis charges.

The Hotel is in an excellent location near to all the main attractions and overlooking a lovely square, but it is let down by its urgent need for refurbishment which was going on whilst we were there.

We arrived at the hotel after a 5 hour journey of which 1 1/2 hours of that was just getting into bath itself, only one road in, a very big rugby game and valentines weekend. The hotels car park was full and had to park in the public one down the road.

We arrived at the Hotel at 2pm to be advised our rooms were not ready. not a problem we thought we would go for a stroll to get our bearing and be back at the hotel to pick up our stuff for our appointment at the spa for 4.30pm so was shocked to find our rooms still not ready at 4pm.

We came back from the spa to get ready for our eveining meal at a local resteraunt, to find a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and the dirty laundry still in our room along with an internal letter to a member of staff and our interconnecting room door unlocked (should have been closed and locked) The problems were delt with by the management but as we were staying just the one night we felt very let down.

Im sure this hotel could be absolutely lovely once fully reburbished and the staffing problems ironed out

“Currently being done up!”

Mercure Francis Hotel

Although this hotel is a bit tired and need of a revamp, they are in the process of revamping the first floor and kitchen, leading to a number of our expectations not being met.
We arrived to find that they weren't doing breakfast to order while the kitchen is being done up, but there was a buffet.
We thought "ok", but when we arrived for breakfast on Saturday morning, paper in hand, we had to wait for 30 minutes for any hot food (or coffee and toast), When it arrived there was a stampede to get a paltry scrap of bacon... The plates had been recycled and were covered in ketchup etc on the underside, pretty grim really.
This was all to a soundtrack of baths etc being ripped out of suites on the floor above! This was my girlfriend's birthday, you can imagine she was delighted with me taking her to this hotel!

I wouldn't have minded, but this hotel isn't cheap, I'd have expected at least a caveat when booking, or a discount while their facilities are under par. Frankly had I known I'd have booked elsewhere.

Apart from the above, It's clean, the staff are friendly and the hotel is in a great location, I think once it's done up and the kitchen installed it will be a good choice for anyone staying in Bath, but i would check what state of refurb they are in before booking...

“Faded chintz.....but great service!”

Mercure Francis Hotel

Hotel is well located near all the main attractions, on a very grand Georgian square. We booked a superior room, which was huge! Yes, the hotel is a bit tatty, but I don't mind that, as long as everything works. They left us a little box of truffles on our bed, along with a personal welcome note from the duty manager...there was also free bottled water and flapjacks in the room, which I thought was a nice touch. We had a couple of drinks at the bar, and the barman bought us a complimentary huge plate of crsips and more truffles! Not bad!

We wanted to move after the first night, as there was a complete idiot next door, banging and crashing around in their room at 4am, slamming their door loudly etc. This was no problem for the staff, who put us in an equally lovely, but quieter room.

The staff here are fantastic, and I would definitely stay here again. Recommended.

“Excellent location, rooms in need of a revamp!”

Went to Bath with my boyfriend for one night and wanted to be right in the centre of Bath. The hotel is in a lovely setting on Queen Square and in close proximity to all the shops, restaurants and Roman Baths so we were pleased with the location. The hotel is a very traditional English hotel with friendly staff but the rooms are in need of some work. I didnt like our first room because it was very dark and small, despite it having a beautiful modern en-suite bathroom. Reception were happy to find us a better room and although we were moved to a much bigger room, the decor was very dated and the bathroom was not the nice modern one we had in the first room! Despite the decor, the hotel was clean and staff are very good. Good that the hotel has a car park at £10 per night and breakfast was very nice too. Overall I would say it is a bit overpriced but excellent location, clean and friendly and staff happy to help.
