It's fair to say the comments about the hotel being shabby and a bit tired do apply to certain areas of the hotel, and normally this would be a big problem for us. But here, it didn't bother us at all. We didn't see anything too terrible and you kind of expect it in wonderful old buildings like these.
In any case, the level of service we experienced more than made up for any scuffed skirting or worn carpet. From the moment we arrived to when we had to leave, nothing was to much trouble. We found everyone to be friendly and very efficent - doors opened for us, taxis ordered, bags transported to and from our car, etc., with no fuss whatsoever, nothing seemed too much trouble.
We only ate in the restaurant at breakfast time and were perfectly happy with the choice and quality of food. It's a quiet and comfortable dining room, a good place to start the day. We found the waiting staff to be attentive and happy to put right the one very minor issue we had.
Although we aren't regular spa visitors, we thought we'd try 'The Spa' as it looked really inviting. The relaxation pool was great, as were the sauna & steam room. I would say that the changing rooms are pretty small and that there could be more room to relax in the spa area, but this didn't spoil our enjoyment.
Our suite was roomy and comfortable but in need of some re-decoration - the bathroom could also have done with an update. One final thing, did anyone else find it difficult to lock/unlock the room door??? The key fobs are enormous!!
