“Scrumptious Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2010

I visited the Halcyon in late September for a light breakfast. I found the quantity and quality of the food amazing. Crumpets, little jams in cute pots, nutella, beautiful onion marmalade which I had never tasted before and was astounded by it's delectable goodness! On recommendation from the lovely manager, Ann, we tried crumpets with Nutella and butter...mmmmm they were joyous! All in all we left, well fed and happy. If the rooms are anything to go on from the standard of the food and friendliness of the staff, next time I might just treat myself and stay. We will surely be back again. :)

For somebody visiting Bath by train, this is the place to stay. If it takes you five minutes to get here from the station platform, you must have dawdled. Once you are here you will find a sensitively converted Georgian property only a very few minutes from the main attractions, plenty of restaurants and Bath's new shopping centre.

The rooms aren't huge but the beds are comfortable. The bathroom is tidy but our shower regularly flooded the floor (no door and a very low lip on the tray - a recipe for turning bathroom into paddling pool). Outside noise was occasionally intrusive but none from within the hotel.

The continental breakfast was well worth having - good variety of cereal and bread plus fruit, eggs, greek yogurt, cheese and salami (and do try the marinated mushrooms). A word of warning - the breakfast room has limited tables so if you do decide to come to breakfast at 9 don't be surprised to find everyone else had the same idea. Come later or earlier and it'll be fine.

i'd definitely stay there again.

My wife and I stayed at the Halcyon for 2 nights and could not fault the hotel. The location is ideal, within a stone's throw of everything - shop, tours, abbey. The rooms may not be the biggest but they are very clean, comfortable and even have a fridge. The staff really make the hotel, they are attentive, helpful and make you feel looked after. The breakfast menu is lovely and as my wife said, really set you up for the day. The bar/reception has a lovely atmosphere and check in/out was seamless.

The only downside with Bath is travelling by car (we queued to get in to the city centre) but use Southgate car park (£17 for two days parking). If you travel by rail this hotel is almost within sight of the station.

We would highly recommend this hotel and would definately return.

I got married in Bath in early October and stayed, along with a good portion of my guests, at The Halcyon. The experience was perfect, start to finish. We had guests coming from all over the world, and the wonderful staff at The Halcyon were essential in helping us manage guest logistics and bookings.

From the moment we arrived, they went out of their way to make our stay perfect. They rearranged rooms to accommodate a guest with less mobility, offered numerous recommendations (restaurants, pubs, dry cleaners), helped us with the various logistics involved with our group (including a rowdy guest or two), and even stored my wedding dress for a few days after we had checked out of the hotel. On one of the nights of our stay, the manager (a truly accommodating guy) kept the bar open late for us, as we were having such a nice time.

The rooms at The Halcyon, though not especially large, are impeccably clean, modern, and comfortable. The bed in our room was fantastic and the shower was amazing. I wish I had one like it at home! Also, the Continental breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I have ever had. Lots of fresh cheeses, soft-boiled eggs, meats, and little details (marinated mushrooms, various jams, etc) that made the breakfast quite special.

Without exaggeration, I can say that our experience at The Halcyon was the best overall hotel experience I have ever had. The staff were all cheerful, helpful, accommodating, and pleasant. Rooms were great. Breakfast wonderful. Everything was perfect. They were an essential part of making our wedding relaxed and comfortable, and I am confident that they provided an excellent experience for our guests.

We'll be back for our first anniversary, for sure!

I was a little unsure about the hotel after I booked it and then read some of the reviews. However I was more than happy with my stay. The staff are incredibly helpful, the rooms are clean and bright, albeit a bit minimalistic, and the full English breakfast is excellent.
The combination of reception, bar, lounge, and dining room in one area is a bit strange to begin with but seems to work well. The only potential problem is when everyone turns up for breakfast at once. If the weather is good this is not a problem as there is a 'pavement cafe' area, but in bad weather or winter this will not work. I understand that extensions are about to begin to extend the indoor facilities.
A couple of previous reviewers had complained about the noise early in the morning from the night club next door, however we asked for, and received, a room looking out over the rear of the building and this was totally peaceful with no noises to be heard.
The hotel is only a few hundred yards from the main shopping centres which also have a number of excellent cafes and restaurants, so the lack of evening dining facilities in the hotel is not a problem. In fact there is an excellent Thai restaurant next door to the hotel. Undercover car parking is available at the new shopping centre some 200 yards from the hotel and costs £12 per day.
In conclusion this is an ideal hotel for a weekend stay, but the lack of storage facilities for clothes etc in the rooms and the constant need to eat out mean that I would not recommend it for a longer stay

Thank you for your review and we're delighted that you enjoyed your stay at The Halcyon. You will be pleased to find our that we have taken over the night club downstairs- the reason for your good nights sleep, and are in the middle of converting it into a large breakfast room and hotel bar that will accommodate all of our guests at once, so there will be no more waiting for a table at breakfast.
Thank you again for your review and we hope to see you once the renovations have finished downstairs!

My husband and I have just had a couple of nights stay at The Halcyon & were exceptionally pleased with both the standard of accommodation & the staff. This being only the second time in 9 years since becoming parents that we have gone away as a couple. Hector the manager was so welcoming and polite and nothing was too much trouble. We will definately returning. Many thanks indeed The Halcyon.

I rarely comment on a hotel but The Halcyon is an exception. When one finds a 'little gem', one is torn between keeping it to oneself or sharing one's good fortune with others. However, The Halcyon in Bath deserves all the recognition it can be given. It is situated within a 10 minute leisurely stroll of Bath Spa station and the centre of historic Bath, including easy access to tour buses and tourist information. It is a perfect small hotel in a beautiful Georgian terrace, with ample parking very close by - should one need it.
What makes this hotel special though is its staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble and who do everything possible to make your stay here as comfortable and enjoyable as is possible. There is no lift in a building of this period but the staff will ensure your bags are taken up or brought down for you.
Whilst it doesn't have its own restaurant for lunch or dinner, continental breakfast is available and the hotel is within walking distance of a huge number of places to eat and which will suit all tastes and budgets. If one is in doubt about where to go, just ask the staff and they can give excellent advice and will book a table for you at no charge.
The small cocktail bar is comfortable and friendly and there is free wi-fi. There is a very pleasant out-door seating area, which is candle-lit in the evenings and is under umbrellas. And you can't go without trying The Halcyon's own cocktail - a true compliment to a wonderful, friendly, well-equipped, convenient and special place to stay.

Really - many thanks for a wonderful short break, we loved your vision for the hotel and all the best for the future.
